Seminar on Tobacco Free Initiative begins


YANGON, 4 Sept-Seminar on Tobacco Free  Initiative
sponsored  by the Health  Department,  Ministry of
Health, began at the Medical  Research  Department
this  morning  with an  address  by  Minister  for
Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein.  In his speech,  Minister
Maj-Gen  Ket Sein said .  Myanmar is  starting  to
take   tobacco   control   measures   and  conduct
Tobacco-Free  Initiative  activities,  and surveys
showed  that  38  percent  of  the  adults  of the
country  were  smokers in 1973 and the  percentage
went up to 46.6 in 1993.  WHO  estimated  an adult
smoker in Myanmar has 2000 to 3000  cigarettes per
year, said the minister.

 Afterwards,   participants   took   part  in  the
discussions  about   disadvantages   of  smoking.
