9.9.99 in Japan

Nearly 200 Burmese dissidents in Tokyo rallied in front of the junta embassy
in Tokyo Thursday, the 9th day of the ninth month of 1999. About a hundred
pro-democracy activists stood in front of the embassy compound from 9a.m. to
4p.m. Another hundred walked Tokyo's government districts chanting
pro-democracy slogans and holding posters supporting the CRPP and the NLD.
As they passed the junta embassy the slogan shouting grew louder as those
rallying in front of the embassy joined them.

Five representatives of the groups called at Japan's foreign ministry and
handed over a statement regarding their country to the ministry officials.
The statement by the Joint Action Committee and addressed to Japan's Foreign
Minister Komura, called on the Japanese government to ---

1. To help maintain the safety of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and leaders of NLD
and other political parties.
2. To help stop the junta's unlawful acts, physical repression and torture.
3. To urge the junta to respect the result of the 1990 elections and turn
over governmental powers to those lawfully elected in that general election.

>From tomorrow they will continue their daily demonstrations from afternoon
two to four.
