Burmese Activists in Germany Demonstrate on 9999

Burmese activists in Germany organize a demonstration in front of the Burmese 
Embassay in Bonn on 9th September 1999. It was participated by  the Burmese 
community all over Germany together with their German friends and supporters 
from the Amnesty International and the German Student Union.

At 10 AM a group of  activists and friends set up an information desk in the 
city center close to  the City Hall at Principalmarkt ( Münster) in Bonn. Here 
they distribute pamphlets and information on   Burma to all passers by. Many 
shown interest and concern towards the Burmese people struggle for democracy and 
peace.

Another group of activists organize a photo exhibition at St. Antoniter Church  
in the City of Cologne from 6- 10 September 1999. On 9999 at 12 PM there was a 
presentation at St. Antoniter Church on the current social, political situation 
and the suffering of the Burmese people.

At about 14:30 the group in Cologne join the group in Bonn and proceeded towards 
the Burmese Embassay at Schumannstr 112. The activists raised the portrait of 
their leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and  the  Peacock flag. The demonstration 
started by paying respect to all comrades who have given their life for the sake 
of democracy and peace in Burma. After that the activists read out poems, 
statement and in unity sing democratic songs and shouted slogans.The activists 
call for a peaceful transfer of power back to the people and to end the 52 year 
long civil war (the longest in the world) that has brought untold suffering to 
all the people of Burma. The German Student Union representative also read out a 
statement, expressing their  solidarity towards  the Burmese student and the 
people in their struggle for peace, justice and human rights.

The highlight of the day was , the activists were joined  by former staff of the 
Burma  Army and Embassay in Bonn . They were U Thein Han, U Hla Soe, U Zin Maung 
Maung and their family members.  Though all have served faithfully for the 
military junta, after seeing the brutality of the military towards the people 
and after being inhumanly treated by the ambassador, all left  the Embassay and 
joined the democratic movement  in Germany. The Burmese activists in Germany has 
warmly welcome them into their democratic circle. U Thein Han( former staff of 
Burmese Embassay in Bonn) also spoke out his feelings and read out  a poem 
written by a famous Burmese poet  Tin Moe., with a song of  -"atmifarmif;oH

-"victory let us raise the peacock flag".
The 9999 demonstration has unite the Burmese Community in Germany. All vowed to 
work in unity, in faith, and in commitment till democracy is won and peace is 
restored in their beloved motherland.
The demonstration came to a close at 18:00 hrs.
