Position Statement on the First Anniversary of Formation of CRPP

September 16, 1999

1. The Committee Representing the People's Parliament (CRPP) was
formed on September 16, 1998, for performing the functions of a
parliament, until the emergence of a full-fledged parliament, in
accordance with the results of the 1990 election.
2. At the time of the formation of the CRPP, as a total of 251 out of the
remaining 459 elected 'Members of parliament, from the National League
for Democracy, Arakan League for Democracy, Mon National League for
Democracy and the Zomi National Congress, accorded their mandates, the
CRPP has the right to make decisions, legally, on behalf the People's
Parliament, in accordance law.
3. Within a year, the CRPP was able to form parliamentary affairs
committees. Moreover, it abolished the unjust laws noted for over-use in
taking unjustified actions against the people and the political
activists. The tasks such as the review, confirmation, amendment,
abolishment etc. of the laws in force were carried out.
4. Also within one year, the CRPP has received, to a certain extent,
international recognition and support. In addition, it has received the
overwhelming support of the Bunnese patriots living abroad.
5. As the CRPP was formed and has been functioning pursuant to the
result of the 1990 election, the will of the people and the law, it is an
immense assistance for the rapid emergence of a full-fledged parliament.
It is also a promising commencement for the achievement of democracy. For
the SPDC military clique, the CRPP is a disturbing, frightening and
alarming entity.
6. We believe that only when a parliament in accordance with the will of
the people has come into being, the people of Burma will be able to
escape from the hardships and horrors they are now facing. For that
reason, we earnestly urge the international community to aid and support
the activities of the CRPP, which is vital for the emergence of a
full-fledged parliament, in accordance with the 1990 election results.
