Statement on CRPP 1st Anniversary

Today, September, 9, 1999, is the 1st Anniversary of the formation of the
Committee Representing People's Parliament  (CRPP). The CRPP was formed as
desired by the Burmese people and with the mandate of majority Members of
Parliament elected by the people in 1990 general election held by the
present military junta itself.

We fully support the CRPP which has the legitimate rights to perform all
the functions of a parliament for the better interests of the Burmese people.

The ruling military junta, SLORC/ SPDC is an illegal and unlawful one that
has seized power in 1990 by massacring several thousands of innocent
peaceful demonstrators. Now again, the SLORC/ SPDC has arrested more than
500 democracy activists. In the meantime, the SLORC/ SPDC is very inhumane
that it has arrested and harassed many Members of Parliament for use as
gambling chips to dissolve the CRPP.

The CRPP has gained broad support from international organizations such as
European parliament and the Inter parliamentary Union. 

We would like to urge the United Nations as well as all international
community to support the CRPP as the legitimate representatives of Burmese
people which is vital for the emergence of a full fledged parliament in
accordance with 1990 general election results.
