Conference on Glazed Ceramics of Southeast Asia Opened

The Conference on Glazed Ceramics of Southeast Asia (
their history, technology and traditions) opened at
Bagan Archaeological Museum in Bagan-NyaungU Township
on 20 September. Minister for Culture delivered an
opening address at the conference which continues till
22 September. Present at the conference were 17
experts from the United States, Australia, France,
Singapore and Japan who are conducting research on the
Southeast Asian glazed ceramics industry, eight paper
readers of Myanmar and interested persons. The
conference is one among the ministry's efforts in
realizing the policy. Myanmar history of glazed
ceramics could not be told in a complete way as no
ancient kilns were found in Myanmar in the past though
there were firm records that glazedware were used in
Myanmar since many many years ago. At present the
Archaeology Department has excavated ancient
glazed-ware-producing kilns in Lagumbyee in Hlegu
Township, Twantay Township and Myaungmya Township. In
the past Myanmar's glazedware history was not included
in compiling the history of glazed ceramics of
Southeast Asia due to loss in historical linkages. As
the ancient kilns were found, Myanmar's glazed
ceramics history can be compiled in a more complete
way. The glazedware production place, the method and
artistic decorations of Myanmar can be studied and all
can make comparison between the Myanmar
glazed-ceramics and those of the other Southeast Asian
nations. Papers on " Origins of styles and glazes of
early glazed ceramics produced in Myanmar", "Glazed
exterior decoration of Bagan temples", "Excavation of
Lagumbyee Kiln ", " Ancient ceramics and glazed Kilns
at Bagan" and " Archaeological report on a shipwreck
off Malaysia" were read.
