(1) Opening Ceremony of International Exhibition (Yangon) 99

    The opening ceremony of the International  Exhibition
(Yangon) 99 organized by Laser World Co Ltd was held
at Tatmadaw Hall,Yangon on 23 September. Computer and
computer equipment, electrical appliances, embroidery
equipment, fashion and security equipment, office and
domestic equipment, personal goods for men and women,
construction materials, equipment for fine arts, engineering equipment, 
furniture, foodstuff, cosmetics, steel products and others were displayed at
the exhibition. Altogether 80 local and foreign companies display their 
products at the exhibition. The exhibition is open from 23 to 26 September 
from 9 am to 5 pm.
    
(2) Tourism Development Management Committee Holds Meeting 1/99

    The Tourism Development Management Committee held its
meeting 1/99 at the Strand Hotel on 23 September,
addressed by Chairman of the Tourism Development
Management Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace
and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt. He
emphasize the fact that "effort have been made with
added momentum since 1996 for development of the
nation's tourism industry to serve the well-being of
the nation. The tourism industry benefits not only the
nation but also the national races of various strata
including entrepreneurs of hotel, tour, transport and
trade services and businessmen. Myanmar is taking part
in the tourism meetings and seminars sponsored by the
ASEAN nations. Continuous coordination work should be
done to make the results of the meetings beneficial to
the nation. As the nation has many tourist attractions
such as resorts, ancient cultural heritage,
significant traditions and culture and costumes of the
national races and eco-tourism destinations, effective
endeavours will promote the tourism industry. Not only
the Ministry of Hotels and Tourism but also the
ministries concerned without differentiating the
duties among themselves should strive in a harmonious
way for the well-being of the nation and the people."
Minister for Hotels and tourism explained the
conditions of hotels, motels and inns, arrangements
being made to upgrade the hotels and motels and their
services, conducting hotel courses for development of
human resources, ASEAN tourism meetings hosted in
Myanmar, international meetings on tourism attended by
Myanmar delegates, plans to cooperate with ASEAN
nations to promote Myanmar's tourism industry and
plans to enhance the industry hailing the year 2000.
Chairmen and officials of the transport subcommittee,
information subcommittee, subcommittee to beautify the
city, ancient culture subcommittee, eco-tourism
subcommittee, subcommittee to ensure smoothness for
tourist arrivals, souvenir production and distribution
subcommittee and subcommittee to develop Mandalay
region presented the work being done sector wise.
            
(3) Minister meets President of Yunnan Machinery &
Equipment Import/Export Corporation

    Secretary of Myanmar Investment Commission met
President of Yunnan Machinery & Equipment
Import/Export Corporation of People's Republic of
China Mr. Lui Zai You and party who called at the MIC
Office on 23 September.

(4) Myanmar Day to be observed on 25 September in Kunming

    Myanmar delegation led by Chairman of Yangon City
Development Committee Mayor U Ko Lay left by air for
the People's Republic of China to attend the ceremony
of Myanmar Day at the International Horticulture Show
99 in Kunming City, Yunnan Province. The International
Horticulture Show 99 is being held from 1 May to 31
October in Kunming City, Yunnan Province. Altogether
68 countries and 29 international organizations
including Myanmar are taking part in the show. The
ceremony of Myanmar Day will be held on a grand scale
at the show on 25 September. At the ceremony, Myanmar
traditional dances, talks and seminars on agricultural
science and technology, Myanmar traditional handicraft
exhibitions will be held and commercial and trade
activities of Myanmar displayed.

(5) Conference on Glazed Ceramics of Southeast Asia Goes on for Third and 
Final Day

        Researchers, Myanmar scholars and observers from
America, Australia, France, Japan and Singapore who
are attending the Conference on Glazed Ceramics of
Southeast Asia being held at Archaeological Museum in
Bagan, led by Director-General of the Department of
Archaeology and Chairman of Khattiya Technology Group
Dr. Myo Thant Tin, visited Ancien Glazed Kilns No 1
and No 6 in Bagan on 21 September. They also studied
Ngakywe, Nadaung Pagoda, Glazed Pagoda near Alodawpyi
Pagoda and Ananda Temple. The Conference on Glazed
Ceramics of Southeast Asia was held for the third day
at the museum on 22 September. Research Officer of the
Department of Archaeology, Researcher Mr Don Hein of
Deakin University of Australia and U Tun Hlaing of the
Department of Physics of Yangon University read their
papers. Researcher Dr. Marie F Dupoizat of France,
Professor of Archaeology Ms. Karen Randolph of America
and Dr. Aung Bo read their papers. American researcher
Dr Ivrn Polunin presented a video show on glazed
ceramics of Southeast Asia. Chairman of the Committee
for Organizing the Conference  presented certificates
of honour and small glazed pots to participants.

(6) International School Software Competition

    Myanmar Computer Entrepreneurs Association will
select computer programmers of ages under 17 to take
part in International School Software Competition
(ISSC'99) to be sponsored by South-East Asia Region
Computer Federation (SEARCC) at National University of
Singapore in Singapore in December. Those wishing to
take part may register themselves at the association
not later than 15 October 1999.
