Korn Dabbaransi yesterday left for a meeting with his Burmese counterpart
in Rangoon, amid tension between the two countries following the recent
seizure of the Burmese embassy in Bangkok.
Mr Korn, also deputy prime minister, said he believed his visit, which
coincided with Burma's closure of border areas and territorial waters,
would bring better understanding between the two countries.
"But I'll not bring up any issue other than those on the agenda for
the health meeting," he said.
Mr Korn's visit came a day after Burmese troops were mobilised opposite
Ratchaburi's Suan Phung district, threatening to attack rebel camps. On
the northern border in Mae Sot district in Tak, more than 3,000 illegal
Burmese immigrants waiting to be repatriated have become stranded after
the border closure.
After a meeting with Maj-Gen Ket Sein, the Burmese health minister, Mr
Korn would attend a three-day World Health Organisation's regional
meeting in Rangoon of Southeast Asian health ministers.
The issues to be discussed include the production and supply of
medicines, development of human resources for primary health care,
eradication of polio and control of tuberculosis, HIV/Aids and
malaria.
Co-operation should also be stepped up on disease control strategies
across national borders and strengthen action at local levels.
The health ministers would also discuss collaborations with other
concerned ministers on the effect of trade agreements on prices of
pharmaceutical products, including mobilisation of external
assistance.
