Subject: Re: MYANMAR EXPORTS 40,000 TONS OF RICE

Not exactly your Central Statistical Organization wish list report but here
are a few facts and figures about rice exports, production and consumption.
Mainly based on U.S. Economic Trends Report for Burma issued in Sept 97
with updates from news agency reports.

It would be nice if the BurmaFund would post the Sept 98 or even Sept 99
report Eco Trends reports on their website!!!

				 figure as reported by Xinhua)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Rice Production Junta estimates,
US embassy estimates about 10% less

1996-7 17,100,000
1998-9 16,000,000

Domestic consumption

Domestic consumption in Burma is the highest in Asia, said DAP's U.
'Our per annum consumption is 190 kilograms per head compared to an
average of about 120 kilos per head in Thailand,' he added.
-------
Estimated population of Burma by 2000 is approximately 50,000,000
Should be enough rice and to spare for increased exports even with
falling production levels.

Here's a gem from somebody else's wish list:
