Unocal/Bangladesh

Re the comment about democracy and former dictatorship, you may be aware
that about this time last year, november 8, a Bangladesk court in Dhaka
sentenced 15 former army officers to death by firing squad for killing
the country's prime minister in a 1975 coup. four others, including a
fomer junior minister for information, were acquitted in the killing of
Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, father of the current prime minister Sheikh
Hasina Wazed (a woman). After taking office in 1996, Sheikh Hasina used
her power to bring her father's killers to trial, saying that ensuring
justice would help entrench democracy in the vilatile country.
Judge Kazi Golam Rasul announced the verdice in a trial that started in
July 1997, saying "They deserve no mercy", reading out a 171 page
judgement. The judge also ordered that the sentences be carried out in
public.

Something the Burmese junta is well aware of.
