(1) Senior General Than Shwe arrives in Lashio
YANGON, 14 Oct - Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council
Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe, accompanied
by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council, members of the
State Peace and Development Council Deputy Prime Minister Vice-Admiral,
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Military Affairs and ministers, senior
Tatmadaw officers and officials, left here for Lashio by Tatmadaw aircraft
yesterday morning.
The Senior General and party were welcomed at Lashio Airport by member of the
State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Shan State (North) Peace and
Development Council Commander of North-East Command, Deputy Commander,
Station Commander of Kyaukme Station and Shan State level departmental
officials.

(2) Senior General Than Shwe and wife Daw Kyaing Kyaing
offer Yadana Magaiktaw, Myathabeik and Shwekyathingandaw
to Maha Myatmuni Buddha Image in Lashio
YANGON, 14 Oct - A ceremony to offer Yadana Magaiktaw, Myathabeik and
Shwekyathingandaw to Maha Myatmuni Buddha Image built on Zeyahayma Hill in
Lashio, Shan State (North), and to consecrate the Buddha image was held this
morning.
Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief of
Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe and wife ,Daw Kyaing Kyaing
attended the ceremony and offered a five-tiered Yadana Magaiktaw and Yadana
Kaytumarlar Yaunghlyandaw to the Buddha image.
The ceremony was held at Sasana Beikmandaw near Gandakuditaik of the Buddha
image at 8.45 am.
Then, the Senior General and wife, party and the congregation received Nine
Precepts from member of the State Sangha Maha.Nayaka Committee Presiding
Sayadaw of Myole Kyaungtaik of Lashio Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta Kavindacara.
Senior General Than Shwe and wife offered the five-tiered Yadana Magaiktaw,
Yadana Kaytumarlar Yaunghlyandaw, rice and alms to the Presiding Sayadaw.
The Senior General and wife conveyed Yadana Kaytumarlar Yaunghlyandaw and
five Mahakyan Buddha images respectively.
The Senior General and wife Daw Kyaing Kyaing offered the five-tiered Yadana
Magaiktaw to the Maha Myatmuni Buddha Image and sprinkled scented water.
Then, the Senior General and wife offered Myathabeik, ?soon?, fruits and
flowers to Maha Myatmuni Buddha Image.
After that, the members of the Sangha consecrated Maha Myatmuni Buddha Image.
The Senior General signed in the record book, and together with wife Daw
Kyaing Kyaing and party, performed the ritual of silver and golden showers to
mark the successful completion of the ceremony.
Then, they offered rice to the members of the Sangha.
?Soon? was offered to the Sayadaws and members of the Sangha at Sasana
Beikmandaw.

(3) Secretary-1 stresses need to seek best means in implementing
Shwedagon Pagoda All-round Perpetual Renovation Project
YANGON, 14 Oct - Leading Committee for All-round Perpetual Renovation of
Shwedagon Pagoda held meeting Buddha Images Tazaung at the southern archway
of the pagoda this evening, attended by Patron of the Leading Committee
Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.
Accompanied by officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office,
the Secretary-l arrived at the southern archway at 5 pm and was.
The Secretary-l inspected the progress in renovation of Yaungdawphwint
Tazaung at the archway.
Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt looked into their requirements, saying he took
pride and was pleased to see collective participation of engineers, experts,
Myanmar architects and literati in implementing the Shwedagon Pagoda
All-round Perpetual Renovation Project.
All the people and the members of the Sangha felt pride and joy for the
successful completion of the hoisting of the Shwehtidaw, which is an enormous
task, he said, stressing the need to seek best means in implementing the
remaining tasks.
After the meeting, the Secretary-l paid obeisance to Padamya Myetshin Buddha
Image on the upper terrace.

(4) Secretary-1 receives Health Ministers and WHO Director
YANGON, 14 Oct - On behalf of the Chairman of the State Peace and Development
Council of the Union of Myanmar Senior General Than Shwe, Secretary-l of the
State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt received Health
Ministers and Regional Director of WHO South East Asia Region who were in
Yangon for the 17th Meeting of Health
Ministers of South-East Asia Region of WHO at Dagon Yeiktha of the Ministry
of Defence at 9 am today.

(5) 17th Meeting of Health Ministers of Countries of WHO
South-East Asia Region concludes
YANGON, 14 Oct - The 17th.Meeting of Ministers of Health of Countries of
South-East Asia Region continued for the second and final day at the Traders
Hotel this morning.
Present at the meeting were Minister of Health and Family Welfare of
Bangladesh, Minister of Health and Education of Bhutan, Minister of Public
Health of Korea, Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, Minister of Health of
the Republic of Maldives, Minister of Health of Nepal, Minister of Health and
Indigenous Medicine of Sri Lanka, Deputy Minister of Health of Myanmar,
Regional Director of WHO South-East Asia Region Dr Uton Muchtar Rafei,
Advisers of Bangladesh, Bhutan, Korea, India, Maldives, Myanmar, Nepal and
Thailand and officials of Offices of Regional Director for South-East Asia
and-WHO Resident Representative in Myanmar.
Minister Maj-Gen Ket Sein chaired the meeting and made a speech.
Then, the ministers and advisers held discussions and approved the draft
presented by the drafting group.
The recommendations made at the meeting are to be carried out by the
countries of South-East Asia Region in a year to come.
Priority is to be given to the recommendations related to the headings such
as roll back malaria, stop TB initiative, tobacco free initiative and the use
of traditional medicine in health care system.
Subjects related to health sector reform, healthy environment, alcohol
control programme and health promotion were chosen to be discussed at the
18th Meeting of Ministers of Health.
Then, the meeting discussed the matters to be presented at the 53rd
Conference of WHO and approved the holding of the 18th Meeting of Ministers
of Health in Katmandu, Nepal, in Year 2000.
The meeting concluded at 12.15 pm .

YANGON, 14 Oct - Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein met Minister of Health
of Nepal Dr Ram Baran Yadav who called at the Toungoo Hall of Traders Hotel
this afternoon.
Dr Ram Baran Yadav had attended the 17th Meeting of Health Minister?s WHO
South-East Asia Region.

(7) Minister meets foreign visitors
YANGON, 14 Oct - Minister at the State Peace and Development Council
Chairman?s Office and Secretary of Myanmar Investment Commission Brig-Gen
Maung Maung met Director of P T Austindo Nusantara Jaya of Indonesia Mr A
Wahyuhadi SH and party, accompanied by Counsellor of Embassy of Indonesia Mr
Stephanus Suwaryanto, who called at the MIC Office at 2 pm today.

(8) Japan to grant assistance for four BEPSs
YANGON, 14 Oct - A grant contract was signed at Basic Education High School
No 6, Botahtaung, This morning to provide assistance from Japan to construct
new buildings at four basic education primary schools in Myanmar.
Ambassador of Japan Mr Kazuo Asakai and the principals of BEPS No 29, Bago,
BEPS No 14, Thakayta, Zaygyi BEPS, Hlegu, and Hmawby, signed the contract.
Minister for Education U Than Aung spoke words of thanks.
The ambassador explained the purpose of the assistance.

(9) Jade lots fetch over $1.3 million
YANGON, 14 Oct - Patron of Central Committee for Myanma Gems Emporium
Minister for Mines Brig-Gen Ohn Myint today observed sale of gems by
competitive bidding at the Mid-Year Gems Emporium being held at the Myanma
Gems Emporium Hall on Kaba Aye Pagoda.
Today, 150 lots of jade worth US $ 1350875 were sold at the gems emporium.
A total of US $ 17362 was realized from sate of jewellery and jade sculpture
at fixed prices.
Sale of jade lots will go on at 9 am on 15 October.
As of today, 508 local and foreign gem merchants have arrived.

(10) Maldives Minister leaves for home
YANGON, 14 Oct - Minister of Health of the Republic of Maldives Mr Ahmed
Abdullah who had attended the 17th Meeting of Health Minister?s WHO
South-East Asia Region left here by air for home this morning.
He was seen off at Yangon International Airport by officials of the Ministry
of Health.

(11) 49 members resign from Palaw Township NLD
YANGON, 14 Oct-Forty-nine members resigned from the National League for
Democracy of Palaw Township, Taninthayi Division.
Forty-nine members of Palaw Township NLD, Taninthayi Division, of their own
volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Palaw Township
Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party
concerned on 7 June 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party
politics of NLD.
