PRESS-RELEASE OF THE CHIN NATIONAL FRONT CNF REGARDING THE SHOOTING TO DEATH
OF SAYADAW U THUNANDA

It has always been the position of the CNF that different religious beliefs
and faiths among the nationalities of Burma must be respected and free of
political interference regardless of the political situation of the country.
This stance of the CNF has been made clearly known to the people and
especially of the Chin State because the CNF believes in the seperation of
religion and state. CNF therefore repeatedly made it clear to the people
that it firmly stands against religious oppression and persecution
systematically conducted by the military dictatorship in Burma. It has
always been the stand of the CNF that there must be freedom of religion in
the country and that every religion must be duly respected and so it never
has any intention of condemning religious beliefs and practices of the
people.

Naturally the CNF which is fighting for freedom is deeply saddened by the
shooting of a Budhhist monk, Sayadaw U Thu Nanda, by an armed group on
October 9, 1999 in Tlangrua village, Chinland, Burma and it strongly
condemns such brutal act

In a press release made by the Myanmar Information Service on October 11,
1999, the CNF has been accused of being responsible for the killing of
Sayadaw U Thu Nanda. This accusation is totally baseless and without any
founddation and is only aimed at creating conflict and misunderstanding
between the people of Budhhist faith and the CNF. The CNF has absolutely
nothing to do with the killing of Sayadaw U Thu Nanda. This is only again a
dirty trick played by Bo Khin Ngut and his group.

While fighting against the military dictatorship of Burma which has been
relentlessly subjecting the people of Burma to oppression and persecution,
the CNF once again would like to make it clear that it will never stand in
the way of freedom of religion.

Keeping in mind the security and safety of the people, the CNF will continue
its fight for the establishment of democratic system in the country.
