1) In the Burmese Newspaper "KYE MON" (The Mirror)published an
article
on 25.9.99 the caption "Famous Liars of the World" appeared
above a
picture of KHIN NYUNT which infuriated the man. The Military
Intelligence was hot on the heels of the staff of the paper.
Arrests
and interrogations followed. It was reported that U Hla Han (in his
fifties) died two days later (27 September 99). He was tortured to
death.

2) Another member of the staff, U Thar Win died on the 2nd October. He
was
also tortured to death. His body was cremated the next day. The
family
was informed of his death by a military intelligence officer and
was
taken to see the casket before the cremation. They had a glimpse of
the
face only. It was badly bruised. They were given Kyats 10,000/ to
perform Buddhist burial rites which takes place customarily a week
after
death. This K 10,000/- equates to US$ 27, the exchange rate in the
market being Kyat360 to one US dollar. With the loss of the bread
winner - what compensation!!!

3) The families of U Hla Han and U Thar Win have been forbidden to
speak
about this to anyone.

4) The other members of the staff at this publishing house came to know
of
the death of their colleagues only on the 1st of October which
caused
anger and resentment.

5) Interrogation and investigation continues to date. 20 of those
arrested
have been released while 7 remain in custody. Fortunately or
unfortunately, death has brought release from further sufferings
and
troubles to 2. How many more will suffer torture and death? This is
the
latest news from inside the country where 45 million are held as
hostages.
Can someone give more details on it? Perhaps OKKAR(s) can deny it

By the way Julian, why do you usually post your personal emails to the
BurmaNet? I know I've done it but it was on purpose. I'm just
curious.
PS: Let me know if you need help improving your German
Julian. I can proof-read it for you before you post to
public. Burmese is my native & German is my second!

Hi Moe,

Two friends of mine yesterday told me they had read an article about
a
journalist of the NLOM being "killed" or "tortured"
over making a
mistake in the paper, calling some big wig a liar. Wrong text at
the
wrong foto, or something. I missed this at scb or Burmanet (maybe I
just did not cath it.) Story familiar to you?

Regards
