China and Britain to discuss the isolation of Burma.
The Head Honcho of China dropped as quietly as possible into
town last night. President Jiang was swept away from Heathrow
and to the Chinese Embassy as large groups angry protesters
vented themselves in streetside demonstrations on a scale not
seen since the arrest of Pinochet a year ago.
This figure of state, of a state that suffers its people under torture
and lack of human rights will continue for 3 days. The whole time
Jiang is in the country. Where he wil be followed wherever he goes
in his specially arranged "state closed carraige" by shouts of
"Free Tibet!" and "Human Rights Now!".
However, in terms of Burma? Britain is soft on Burma. But Britian
has never been a nation that would stand alone against such a
Giant.
And this may also be an opportunity to discuss Asian human rights,
or the lack of them in other nations. For PM Tony Bair and FM
Robin Cook will certainly discuss the isolation of Burma.
More a question of, "Would you rather have the west as a friend,
or those weaker around you who care nothing for the views of the protesters?
With the Horse Guards lining ones route, breakfast, lunch and
dinner at the Palace? None of which would be received by the
generals of Rangoon Of course this all shows what one can do if
one has in the past fought battle after battle over opium as the
Brits did against China? And wherein the royals scored a healthy
profit from so doing. But that was "way back then".
So now, if the generals would like a lunch at the Palace, either
Burma has to grow a little larger, gain use of long range nuke power
or end its role as a major abuser of human rights, freedom of the
press, and, to add a touch of class, end its role as the worlds number
one state drug dealer.
Because, for JIang is here for more than talks on "trade".
That's for sure.
