Subject: Jian Zemin, Chinese President visits Chirac and France -Oct 22-26

French President Chirac is doing all he can to make the Chinese
President feel comfortable at his small village fiefdom, in Corrèze,
France. Remember that Chirac went to China two years ago, the the spring
of 1997, a voyage largely critized by the French political opposition
and human rights groups. This time, French leftist leadrs Francois
Holland and Jack Lang, President of the French National Assembly Foreign
Affaires Commission, have openly crticized the "personal démarche" of
Chirac's political generosity to the dictator,denounced the visit,
saying "You cannot on e one hand condemn Pinochet, and on the other roll
out the red carpet for the Chinese president". 

 And yesterday, French right-centrist leader Dominique Paillé (UDF) , on
national radio called it "inopportune" and "shocking".

A lot of demonstrations are planned. Former french prime minister, the
socialist Laurent Fabius, president of the Naional Assembly refused to
formally invite the chinese dictator into the building. 

Chinese dissident, Wei Jingsheng, one of the nominees for the Nobel
Peace Prize, and leader of the Peking uprising, exiled in 1997, will
lead a demonstration at Brive a few kms from the Jian Zemin's meeting
then in Bity...
