NO MORE BROTHERHOOD WITH INDONESIA

NO MORE BROTHERHOOD WITH INDONESIA
By Julien Moe

Today Indonesia is free from dictatorship influenced by the military and
the world has hailed the triumph of the first democratically elected
government. Violence has ceased. The people of Indonesia are happy. The only
men who are not happy are the generals of the Burmese regime because
Indonesia, a former alliance, chose to adopt democratic norms instead of
military dictatorship. The men of the Burmese regime are unhappy because
they are being outnumbered. Their days are numbered too. When General
Wiranto's armed forces were helping the militias crush the East Timorese,
the Burmese army rhetorically said " they are right behind the Indonesian
brothers". Such comments were insults to the East Timorese and the
democratic Indondesians fighting for freedom and democracy in Indonesia.

In an overwhelmingly emotional homecoming, exiled guerrilla chieftain Jose
Alexandre ``Xanana'' Gusmao of East Timor returned to his ravaged capital
today and was greeted by a crowd of thousands who wept, cheered and roared:
``Viva East Timor!'' Now is the time for the regime in Burma to let Aung San
Suu Kyi continue her political activities to bring change to Burma. The
Burmese saying that goes as " Nobody has died of starvation in Burma" is no
longer valid for contemporary Burma as food scarcity is now obvious
according to the recent investigative reports filed by the Asian Human
Rights Commission. The people of Burma have suffered enough. If not now, when?
