Myanmar calls for strengthening of defense force

Xinhua, Yangon, 27 October 1999. Myanmar leader General Maung Aye
Tuesday called for the uplifting the qualifications and strength of
the country's national defense force based on firm economic progress.

Maung Aye, who is Vice-Chairman of the Myanmar State Peace and
Development Council, made the call when meeting with local authorities
and departmental personnel in Loikaw, the country's Eastern Kayah state,
The New Light of Myanmar reported Wednesday.

"In this world today, all the countries are striving to stand on their own
feet,"
said Maung Aye, who is also Deputy Commander-in-chief of the Myanmar
defense services and Commander-in-chief of the army.

"In this world today, big neo-colonialist nations practicing bullying
methods are attempting to interfere in and manipulate the internal affairs of
developing countries," he said. He stressed the need to have a modern, mighty
and qualified defense force to ward off the danger of interference and
manipulation.
