1022-01 Myanmar Merchant Shipping Act Amended
**A new law was promulgated in Myanmar on 20th October amending the Myanmar
Merchant Shipping Act.

The new amendment to the act demands for the employment of properly
qualified officers, doctors and seamen in the Myanmar and International
merchant ships who enters or leave Myanmar ports.

Infringement of this regulation has penalties of up to Kyats 100,000, equal
to US$312.50.

1022-02 Japanese Irrigation Technology In Yangon
**A Japanese irrigation engineer from Kubota Corporation who is currently
in Yangon met with the Secretary of Myanmar's Foreign Investment Commission
in Yangon on 20th October, For posible to setup water pump factory in
Myanmar.

Japanese-made Kubota water pumping machines are popular amongst Myanmar
farmers from years.

1022-03 UN & Japanese Agencies To Hold Seminar In Yangon
**Myanmar's Forestry Ministry together with the Japan's National Space
Development Agency (NASDA) and United Nations Education, Science and
Cultural Organization of Asia Pacific Region (ESCAP), are holding a
regional seminar on Earth Observation for Tropical Ecosystem Management in
Yangon from 25th to 29th October.

Delegates of 14 countries (Malaysia, Thailand, Nepal, India, Bangladesh,
Fiji, Japan, Laos, Vietnam, France, Cambodia, the Philippines and Sri
Lanka) will attend the seminar.

1022-04 Mitsui and Mitsubishi Reps In Yangon
**General Manager of Property Development and Construction Division of
Mitsui Corporation who is currently in Yangon met with the Myanmar's
Minister for Light Industry in Yangon on 20th October in Yangon.

Mitsui Corporation's Construction wing is developing an industrial zone in
Mingladon town, 30 km off Yangon city centre, or 14 km from Yangon
International Airport.

Minister for Light Industry also had a meeting on 20th October with the
General Manager of Japan's Mitsubishi Corporation who is also currently in
the country.

1022-05 Remote Sensing Technology In Myanmar
**Yangon-based Myanmar Intergraph Company held a seminar on Geographic
Information System using remote sensing technology on 20th October in
Yangon.

The remote sensing technology may also be used in agriculture, forest and
environmental conservation, and mineral excavation works.

1022-06 Myanmar Statistics

1. With the assistance of UNDP Human Efficiency Promoting
Programme(extension)is being implemented in western Rakhine province,
northwestern Chin province and in northern Kachin province at the cost of
US$ 10.9 million over two and half years period. From this September, Human
Efficiency Promoting Programme Phase III is launched at the UNDP assistance
of US$ 8.2 million in those three provinces.

2. Myanmar's Chairman Of National Health Committee in his address to the
17th Meeting of Health Minister of South East Asia Region of WHO said over
95% of Myanmar children, (about 5 million) are immunized from polio.

3. According to a statistic compiled by Myanmar Statistical Organization
(CSO) Myanmar's current population are 48 million. That translates to about
70 persons per sq km). The annual population growth in Myanmar is 1.84%. By
the year 2000 Myanmar's population is expected to hit the 50 million mark.
