Fouling MI Led to Officer's Downfall

SNA reports from Tachilek that recent dismissal of its district officer =
was=20
brought about by the local military intelligence unit's report to =
Rangoon.

Ltc. Ko Ko Htay, Chairman of Tachilek District Peace and Development=20
Committee, was unceremoniously dismissed on 21 October and ordered to=20
report to Rangoon the following day, following a scathing report from =
Maj.=20
Thein Han, Commander of MI - 24, stationed in Tachilek, according to an=20
informed source close to the district office, says SNA.

"Four charges were directed against him", the source told SNA. "One,=20
selling land confiscated from the local people in Hawngluk (about 7 =
miles=20
northeast of Tachilek) to Chinese business people; Two, failure to =
report=20
the receipts for August and September; Three, receiving B. 7 million =
from=20
Thai business community in order to lobby for the reopening of the =
border,=20
and, Fourth, beating an intelligence officer, who was escorting some=20
informants across the river into Thailand on an unknown mission, without =

inquiring MI - 24 first".

"Most likely, the MI - 24 was also making money by offering protection=20
services to illegal border crosses", said the source to SNA.

The new chairman of the District Committee is Ltc. Ko Ko, according to=20
unconfirmed reports.
