      of Shan State (North)


YANGON, 30 Oct - Chairman  of Work  Committee  for
Development  of Border  Areas and  National  Races
Secretary-1  of the State  Peace  and  Development
Council  Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt met the  national  race
group led by U Kan Ywet of Shan State  (North)  at
the  Tatmadaw  Guest House on Inya Road at 3.45 pm
today.

They  discussed  regional  development  tasks  and
preservation  of  traditions  and culture.

(2)   Seventh Myanmar  Traditional  Cultural  
      Performing Arts Competition continues


YANGON, 30 Oct - The Seventh  Myanmar  Traditional
Cultural Performing Arts Competition continued for
fifth day at the designated venues today.

Present on the occasion were Patron of  Organizing
the   Seventh   Myanmar    Traditional    Cultural
Performing  Arts  Competition  Secretary-l  of the
State Peace and  Development  Council  Lt-Gen Khin
Nyunt,  Secretary-2  Lt-Gen  Tin Oo,  Chairman  of
Leading  Committee for Organizing the  Competition
member of the State Peace and Development Council.

Altogether 15  competitors  took part in Maha Gita
event of higher  education  1l level  (women) with
the  song   "Badda   Gaba"   and  16   competitors
participated  in  religious  song event of amateur
level (men) with, the song  "Thiri  Dhamma" in the
song competition at the National Museum today.

Basic  education  level ( 15-20)  (boys) Maha Gita
event and  amateur  level  (women)  modern and old
songs event of the song  competition  will be held
at the same venue on 31 October.

At the National  Theatre on Myoma Kyaung  Road, 15
competitors  of amateur  level  (women)  and 16 of
basic  education  level (10-15)  (boys) event took
part in the dance competition.

Competitors  of  basic  education  level (  15-20)
(boys) and basic education  level (10-15)  (girls)
will take part in the dance competition tomorrow.

Competitors  of  professional  level  in the  song
composing   competition   practiced   their  songs
entitled   "Hnit-sei-tit-yazu-nidan"  at  Kanbawza
Theatre of Fine Arts Department on Kaba Aye Pagoda
Road  today.  Chairman  of Panel of Judges  of the
song composing  competition Bogale U Tint Aung and
members supervised practising work.

On 31 October, competitors of amateur level in the
song  composing  competition  will practice  their
work   at Kanbawza  Theatre.

(3)   Secretary-1  attends  ceremony  to hand  over  
      new four-storey  building  for BEMS in  Dagon  
      Myothit Seikkan Township


YANGON, 30 Oct - Repave  streets of Yuzana  Garden
City  Housing  Project in Dagon  Myothit,  Seikkan
Township were put into service and new air-con bus
lines opened at the junction of Kyunshwewa  Street
and Padauk Street in the compound of Yuzana Garden
City Housing  Project  this  morning,  attended by
Secretary-1  of the State  Peace  and  Development
Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Vice-Chairman   of  Yangon   Division   Peace  and
Development Council Deputy Commander Brig-Gen Hsan
Hsint,  Chairman of Yangon  Division All Bus Lines
Control Committee U Phone Kyaw and Chairman U Htay
Myint formally  opened No 32 and No 56 Air-con bus
lines which will ply between  Yuzana  Garden  City
Housing Project and Hsinma-like Highway Terminal.

The  Secretary-l  performed  ritual  of  gold  and
silver   showers  to  mark  the   success  of  the
ceremonies.  A   ceremony   to   hand   over   new
four-storey  building for Basic  Education  Middle
School donated by Yuzana Construction Group to the
Ministry  of  Education  was held at the school on
Gangaw  Street in the  compound  of Yuzana  Garden
City Housing Project.

 Chairman   of   Myanmar    Education    Committee
 Secretary-  1  Lt-Gen  Khin  Nyunt  unveiled  the
 signboard of "No 2 Basic Education Middle School,
 Dagon Myothit  Seikkan  Township,  Yuzana  Garden
 City".

Afterwards, U Htay Myint reported on Yuzana Garden
City  Housing   Project  and   presented   related
documents of the school to Director-General  of No
3  Basic  Education  Department  Col  Thein  Aung.
Director-General  U Armt Kyaw  presented the grant
to the  Ministry of  Education  through  Col Thein
Aung.

Next, U Htay Myint  presented one million Kyat for
the school  fund to the  Secretary-l  .  Member of
the  Board of  Directors  of  Yuzana  Construction
Group  U  Win  Myint  presented  K  1,483,160  for
purchase of teaching aids and members of the Board
of  Directors U Lay Myint and U Kyin Toe K 505,490
for one  year  for  welfare  of  teachers  and for
purchase  of  school  uniform  and  stationery  to
Headmistress Daw Kyi Kyi Mya.

In his address, the Secretary-l  said before 1988,
Yangon  City  was  crowded  with   squatters   and
homeless people and densely  populated;  moreover,
Yangon  City  with  quarters  which  were  not  in
hygienic   conditions,   did  not  possess   urban
characteristics.

So,  step-by-step  measures have been taken to see
to it that Yangon City, the capital of Myanmar, is
pleasant    and    beautiful    and   has    urban
characteristics like cities of other countries.

As the first  step,  Hlaingthaya,  Shwepyitha  and
Dagon  Myothit have been  established,  and people
from  ;   densely-populated   wards  and  squatter
quarters in the city have been moved there.

Afterwards, the Secretary1  signed in the visitors
book.  In Yuzana Garden City Project, 16-mile-long
concrete  road and  5-mile-long  tarred  road were
built at a cost of K 668.7 million.

No 32 Air-con  Buses  will go along the route from
Yuzana  Garden  City  to  Thakayta   (Shukhintha),
Pazundaung, Sule and Hsinmalaik  Highway Terminal,
and No 56 Air-con  Buses  will run along the route
from  Yuzana   Garden  City  to  South   Okkalapa,
Thuwunna, Dawbon,  Pazundaung, Sule and Hsinmalaik
Highway  Terminal every ten minutes from 6 am to 6
pm daily.

The  four-storey  middle school built at a cost of
over K 60  million  by Yuzana  Construction  Group
includes  24  classrooms,  an  office  room of the
headmistress,  a recreation  room of the teachers,
an assembly hall, a computer room, an arts room, a
domestic  science room, a library and toilets, and
there  are  also  computers,  TV  sets  and  video
cassette players.  Implementation of Yuzana Garden
City  Project  which  occupies  about 800 acres of
land,  continues, and single housing units, modern
apartments,  buildings of international  standard,
religious  building sports grounds, bus terminals,
markets,  super  markets  and parks  will be built
there.

(4)   Secretary-2   meets  delegation  of  Border  
      Areas Development   Corporation   of  ROK   
      Ministry  of Agriculture


YANGON, 30 Oct -Secretary-2 of the State Peace and
Development   Council   Lt-Gen   Tin   Oo   met  a
five-member  delegation led by Executive  Director
Dr   Ro   Kun-Kil,   Border   Areas    Development
Corporation, Ministry of Agriculture, the Republic
of Korea, and  officials of  Myanmar-based  Korean
company Myanmar First International, Korea-Myanmar
Cooperation  Organization,  in the meeting room of
the  Ministry  for  Progress  of Border  Areas and
National   Race  and   Development   Affairs  this
morning.

They discussed  modern farming sector,  mechanized
farming  sector and regional  development  sector.
Officials present held discussions about technical
assistance  in  agriculture  for   development  of
border areas,  assistance for the transport sector
in border areas and that for rural development.

(5)   Tatmadaw  families,  well-wishers  donate  
      rice to Sarthintaiks in Yangon West District


YANGON,   30   Oct   -   Tatmadaw   families   and
well-wishers   donated   rice  to  Mon   Pariyatti
Sarthintaik  in  Seikkan   Township,  Yangon  West
District, this morning, attended by Secretary-2 of
the State Peace and  Development  Council Chief of
Bureau of Special Operations Chief of Staff (Army)
Lt-Gen Tin Oo.

Padana Nayaka of the Sarthintaik  Bhaddanta Kesara
administered the Five Precepts.The Secretary-2 and
party presented offertories to the Sayadaws.

Commodore Kyi Min,  Brig-Gen  Myint Swe and Col Ye
Tun presented rice donated by Tatmadaw families to
the Padana Nayaka Sayadaw.

Then,  well-wishers also donated 21 sets of robes,
one bags of gram,  150 viss of  iodized  salt,  15
packets of soft for tooth brushing and 590 bottles
of  indigenous  medicines  to  the  Padana  Nayaka
Sayadaw.

The  minister  and  deputy  ministers  accepted  K
400,000 for the fund of the Sarthintaik donated by
well-wishers.

Director  of  Resettlement   Col  Aung  Thein  and
Minister  for   Religious   Affairs  U  Aung  Khin
supplicated  on the purpose of the  donations  and
religious affairs.Later, the Padana Nayaka Sayadaw
delivered a sermon, followed by sharing of merits.

Similarly,  a ceremony  to donate  rice to Chanmye
Gonwai  Nunnery in Mayangon  Township  was held at
the nunnery this  morning.Insein  Ywama  Pariyatti
Sarthintaik Nayaka Sayadaw Bhaddanta Vinayalankara
administered the Eight Precepts.

The Secretary-2  and party donated  offertories to
the Sayadaws.  Then,  officials  presented  over K
200,000 to Padana Nayaka Nun Daw  Hsekavati of the
nunnery.

(6)   Secretary-2,  Secretary-3  attend  Seventh  
      Annual General  Meeting of  Myanmar  Edible  
      Oil  Dealers Association


YANGON,  30  Oct  -  The  Seventh  Annual  General
Meeting of Myanmar Edible Oil Dealers  Association
was  held at the  Mayhwa  Hall at 5.15  pm  today,
attended  by  Secretary-2  of the State  Peace and
Development  Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo and Secretary-3
of the State Peace and Development  Council Lt-Gen
Win Myint.

President   of   Myanmar    Edible   Oil   Dealers
Association  U  Than  Oo  made  a  speech  on  the
occasion.Then,  Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Pyi
Sone  extended  greetings .  The meeting  approved
the  reports  of  CEC  and   financial   statement
followed by resignation and election of CEC and EC
members.Then,  the meeting  ended with  concluding
remarks  by  President U Than  Oo.

(7)   Commander,  minister  inspects  Khabaung 
      Bridge in Toungoo
      

YANGON, 30 Oct - Chairman of Bago  Division  Peace
and  Development  Council  Commander  of  Southern
Command   Maj-Gen   Tin  Aye  and   Minister   for
Construction   Maj-Gen  Saw  Tun  arrived  at  the
construction   site  of  new  Khabaung  Bridge  in
Toungoo Township, Bago Division, this morning.

The commander and the minister  gave  instructions
on worksite safety,  systematic  storage of bridge
construction  materials  and works to be done with
set standard, and attended to their needs.

It is a new bridge being built at the  entrance of
Toungoo on  Yangon-Mandalay  Highway.  The bridge,
600-ft  long and 48-ft  wide, is being  built with
four lanes and six-foot  pedestrian  lanes on both
sides.

Then,  the  minister  and  party   inspected  road
sections  and bridges on  Yangon-Mandalay  Highway
and Toungoo-Yangon Highway.

(8)   Myanmar Mayflower Bank Ltd opens another 
      branch in Mandalay

YANGON, 30 Oct - A ceremony to mark the opening of
Mandalay Branch No 3 of Myanmar Mayflower Bank Ltd
was held at the  Sedona  Hotel  in  Mandalay  this
morning.

In his opening  address, the commander said in the
financial  service sector, the opening of banks is
the most important, and now, altogether 21 private
banks    are    providing    financial    services
successfully.

The banks need to provide  services  beneficial to
national  people and  agricultural  and industrial
entrepreneurs  in response to the  goodwill of the
State  and  assistance  of  the   ministries   and
regional authorities.

Then, Deputy  Minister  Brig-Gen Than Tun said the
branch opened in Mandalay today is the  fourteenth
of Myanmar  Mayflower Bank Ltd, and efforts of MMB
to open  branches in cities and  provide  monetary
services  starting  from  June  1994 to date,  are
highly  laudable.Altogether  three  branches  have
been   opened   in   Mandalay,   which   takes  up
economically strategic position of upper Myanmar.

The ceremony to open  Mandalay  Branch No 3 of MMB
was held at the branch in Chanayethazan  Township,
Mandalay.  Myanmar  Mayflower Bank Ltd has already
opened seven branches in Yangon, three branches in
Shan State and three  branches  in  Mandalay,  and
arrangements  are being made to open more branches
in Monywa, Meiktila, Muse, Kengtung,  Myingyan and
Yangon.

(9)   Workshop on Regional Collaboration in 
      Conservation of Hkakaborazi Mountain Ecosystem 
      held
      

Y   ANGON,   30  Oct  -   Workshop   on   Regional
Collaboration   in  Conservation   of  Hkakaborazi
Mountain Ecosystem jointly sponsored by the Forest
Department and International Center for Integrated
Mountain  Development  (ICIMOD) was held in Putao,
Kachin  State,  from 26 to 29  October.Hkakaborazi
Mountain ecosystem is endowed with unique and rich
biological diversity and covers the head-waters of
the most important Ayeyawady River.


In this workshop papers related to conservation of
biodiversity   in   Eastern   Himalayan    Region,
distribution  of flora and  fauna of  Hkakaborazi,
socio-economic   situation  of  local   community,
conservation   and   management   of   Hkakaborazi
National Park were  presented and  discussed.  The
recommendations  on  conservation  and  management
strategies  for  Hkakaborazi  National  Park  were
adopted.During   the  workshop  the   participants
visited the environs of Putao-Mular  Shidi village
and Machanbaw Township.

(10)  Pilgrims,   holiday-makers   crowd  religious  
      and recreation centres


YANGON, 30 Oct - Pagodas,  recreation  centres and
amusement  parks in Yangon were seen bustling with
activities  today as it was a Saturday,  an office
holiday.

Devotees, monks and people  including  tourists of
Yangon and  various  regions of the  country  paid
obeisance  at  Shwedagon,  Sule,   Botahtaung  and
Shwephonepwint   pagodas   and   made   donations.
Holiday-makers   crowded  the  People's  Park  and
People's   Square  and   enjoyed   themselves   at
Shweyinbyin recreation centre.

(11)  Ramayana  drama  competition  continues for 
      fourth day
      

YANGON, 29 Oct - The Ramayana drama competition of
Seventh Myanmar  Traditional  Cultural  Performing
Arts Competition was held at the National  Theatre
on Myoma Kyaung Street at 7 pm fourth day today.

The  Ramayana  drama  troupe of Mandalay  Division
took  part  in  the  competition.

(12)  Minister  for  Mines  inspects  Salt  Mill 
      and Tin Smelting Plant
      

YANGON, 30 Oct - Minister for Mines  Brig-Gen  Ohn
Myint  arrived  at Salt  Mill of  Myanma  Salt and
Marine  Chemical  Enterprise in Thakayta  Township
yesterday  evening.They  were welcomed by Managing
Director U Saw Win and officials.


The   minister   inspected   the  mill   and  gave
suggestions.Minister  Brig-Gen  Ohn Myint  went to
Tin Smelting Plant in Thanlyin in the evening.They
were welcomed by Managing  Director of No 2 Mining
Enterprise U Tin Win and  officials.  The minister
and   party   inspected   the   plant   and   gave
instructions  to  officials.

(13)  Myanmar cultural troupe arrives back from ROK


YANGON,  30  Oct  - A 15  member-Myanmar  cultural
troupe led by Rector of the  University of Culture
U Tin  Soe  arrived  back  here  by air  from  the
Republic of Korea this evening after  entertaining
at International Travel Expo ' 99 held in ROK from
27 to 29 October.

The  delegation  members were welcomed back at the
Yangon  International  Airport by Deputy  Minister
for  Culture  U Soe  Nyunt,  directors-general  of
departments  under the ministry and  officials and
their  families.

(14)  37th Convocation held at MU


YANGON, 30 Oct - The 37th  Convocation of Mandalay
University was held at Convocation  Hall of MU for
the first day today.  Present on the occasion were
Rector  of MU U Lu  Ni,  Pro-Rector  U  Saw  Aung,
members of MU Management  Board, faculty  members,
principal,   associate   professors,    registrar,
graduates  and  their   relatives.In  the  morning
session, the rector  conferred  M.Sc degree on one
graduate,  B.A(Hons) on 24, B.Sc (Hons) on 31, B.A
on  64  and   B.Sc   on  359   and  16   absentia.

(15)  21 members resign from Shwedaung Township NLD

YANGON, 30 Oct - Twenty-one  members resigned from
National   League  for   Democracy   of  Shwedaung
Township, Bago Division.


Twenty-one members of Shwedaung Township NLD, Bago
Division,  of  their  own  volition,  resigned  by
sending   letters  of  resignation   to  Shwedaung
Township  Multiparty  Democracy  General  Election
Commission and the party concerned on 29 September
1999 as they no longer  wished to  participate  in
party  politics   of NLD.

Summary of  observations  recorded  at 09:30 hours
MST:  During   the  past  24   hours,   rains   or
thundershowers  have been  scattered  in Ayeyawady
and Bago Divisions and widespread in the remaining
areas  with  locally  heavy  falls in  Taninlthayi
Division and isolated heavy falls in Kachin State,
lower Sagaing, Mandalay and Magway Divisions.  The
noteworthy amounts of rainfall recorded were Myeik
3.78 inches, Dawei 3.43 inches, Bhamo 3.07 inches,
Meiktila  2.17  inches,  Aunglan  1.69  inches and
Shwebo 1.61 inches.

Maximum temperature on Oct 29 was 26.5C (80%).

Minimum temperature on Oct 30 was 23.0C (73%).

Relative  humidity at 0930 hours MST on Oct 30 was
92%.  - -Total  duration of sunshine on Oct 29 was
0.0  hour  approx.  Rainfall  on Oct 30  was  10mm
(0.39 inch) at Yangon  Airport, 4mm (0.16 inch) at
Kaba-Aye and 8mm (0.32 inch) at central Yangon.

Total  rainfall  since I January  1999 was  2850mm
(112.20 inches) at Yangon Airport,  3446mm (135.67
inches) at Kaba-Aye and 3537mm (139.25  inches) at
central Yangon.

Maximum wind speed at Yangon  (Kaba-Aye)  was 9mph
from southeast at 13:35 hours MST on Oct 29.

Bay inference:  Yesterday's  severe  cyclone storm
over the north Bay has crossed  Orissa coast, near
Chandabali   (lndia)   and   weakened    gradually
overland,  according to the observations  recorded
at  06.30  hours  MST  today.  Weather  is  partly
cloudy in the southwest  Bay and cloudy  elsewhere
in the Bay of Bengal.

Valid till evening of 31st October  1999:  Rain or
thundershowers will be widespread in Chin, Rakhine
and Mon States,  Yangon and  Taninthayi  Divisions
and scattered in the  remaining  areas.  Degree of
certainty is 80%.

State  of  the  sea:  Seas  will  be  moderate  in
Myanmar waters.

Outlook for subsequent two days:  Continuation  of
rain in southern Myanmar areas.
