Asia lawmakers seek to improve local healthcare

KATHMANDU, Nov 1 (Reuters) - Lawmakers from nine Asian countries met in
Nepal on Monday to discuss how to improve healthcare aimed at women, the
disabled and other ``vulnerable'' people, organisers said.

The Regional Conference of Parliamentarians on Health for Vulnerable
Populations hopes to develop measures aimed at forging new partnerships
between the World Health Organisation (WHO), health sectors and governments,
they said.

Nepal Prime Minister Krishna Prasad Bhattarai, who opened the three-day
conference, said political will, increased resources and better health
networks were key to helping improve the lives of impoverished millions.

The conference brought together around 70 delegates from Bangladesh, Bhutan,
India, Indonesia, the Maldives, Myanmar, Nepal, Thailand and Sri Lanka.

Uton Muchtar Rafei, WHO regional director for Southeast Asia, defined
``vulnerable'' people as poor people with limited access to healthcare.

``Our aim is to strengthen inter-sectoral action for health,'' he said.
