1101-01 Myanmar Reps Meet with Suzuki Japan Officials
**Myanmar's Minister for Heavy Industries was in Japan recently, at the
invitation of Suzuki Corporation of Japan.

During his stay in Japan the minister met with the company's president to
discuss the Myanmar - Suzuki joint business venture as well as on future
business cooperation. Suzuki has started to assemble motor vehicles (Suzuki
Wagon R+) in Myanmar. Also visited were the Tokyo Motor Show '99 and
Suzuki's Takasukam motor vehicles factory.

1101-02 Textile Industry Seeks Business Partners
**The Myanma Foreign Investment Commission met with visiting entrepreneurs
of Hong Kong's Proda Textile Industries in Yangon on 28 October.

Hong Kong's main business in Myanmar is in the textiles industry as well as
in ready-made garments production. Out of 14 overseas garment and textile
companies operating in Myanmar 9 of them are owned by Hong Kong firms. In
the latest account of Myanma Investment Commission, Hong Kong companies has
invested over US$ 120 million in Myanmar.

Overseas garment companies are operating in Myanmar mainly to export their
products. Myanmar made garments get good market shares in Japan, USA and in
other parts of the world.

Myanmar analysts are also for potential investments in cotton yarn
manufacturing and weaving businesses in Myanmar.

Myanma Textile Industry Department is seeking joint venture partners for 18
factories including, spinning and weaving factories, garment, blanket, and
towel factories under its operations.

1101-03 Myanmar Fisheries Help Rural Development
**Myanmar's Fishery Minister met in Yangon with visiting officials from
Korea's Rural Development Corporation on 28 October.

Myanmar's southern and western commercial fishing regions have experienced
rapid infrastructure development during these years. Local as well as
overseas fishing companies contributed immensely for the rural development.

In southern Tanintharyi province, fishing enterprises take a leading role
in the construction of the Yangon-Kawthaung (Myanmar's southern most town)
Highway leading to the Thailand's southern border.

In the western Rakhine province meanwhile the fishing enterprises are
contributing to the construction of highways linking Yangon with Sittwe,
the provincial capital near Myanmar-Bangladesh border.

1101-04 Modernization Of Communication Systems In Myanmar
**Myanmar's Communication Policy Supervisory Committee held its annual
meeting in Yangon on 28th October.



The Committee discussed the detail plans for speedy GSM telephone
installation as well as for starting the Internet system in Myanmar.

Myanmar is installing 100,000 GSM cellular phones nationwide by March 2000.
Internet meanwhile is expected available in Myanmar before the year 2000
begins.

The meeting also laid down action plans for installing telephones at the
agricultural land reclamation work sites across the country and also for
the installation of telephones in Monywa Industrial Zone, some 600 km
northwest of Yangon. Myanmar signed an agreement with an Israeli company
last August for the installation of 6,000 phone lines for the industrial
zones (Yangon).

1101-05 More Sugar Production This Year
**Sugar mills in central Myanmar have started their production; sugarcane
harvest is almost completed in most parts of the region.

On 28th October, another sugar factory near Taungoo, (a major commercial
town in Myanmar's sugar growing region) had started its production.
According to the factory officials, this year, the factory is expected to
produce over 18,500 tons of sugar by consuming 200,000 tons of sugarcane.
The number of sugar mills in this region is expected to increase by early
year 2000.

1101-06 Myanmar Last Week
**Last week's business summary:
1. Last week Myanmar marked the 54th Foundation Day of the United Nations.
At the ceremony marking the day, high officials predicted that Myanmar in
the 21st century would be an economically sustainable and environmentally
sound nation.

2. Yangon hosted the regional seminar on Earth Observation for Tropical
Ecosystem Management last week. Delegates from 14 countries attended the
3-days seminar. The seminar is jointly sponsored by the UN and Japanese
agencies.

3. List of foreign business delegation who visited Myanmar last week
A Malaysian business delegation led by Chairman of Ayer Molk Rubber
Production and MOCOM Communication of Malaysia met in Yangon with
Vice-Chairman of Myanma Investment Commission.

Malaysian entrepreneurs of Bernas Group visited Yangon and met in Yangon
with Myanmar's Telecommunication Minister on 25th October.

India's Ajanta Pharma Ltd Vice-President met in Yangon on 25th October with
Myanmar's Minister for Light Industries.

Japanese entrepreneurs delegation led by Vice-Director of Otsuka
Pharmaceutical Company visited Yangon and met with Myanmar's Minister for
Health.

Chinese entrepreneurs of Shangdong Weichi Import & Export Corporation from
northeastern Chinese province of Shangdong visited Yangon last week and met
with Myanmar's Minister for Light Industries.

Rubber Industry Smallholders Development Authority of Malaysia officials
were in Yangon last week and met with Myanmar's Investment Commission
officials in Yangon.
