1102-01 Japan & Myanmar Business Dialogues On
**High Officials from the Ministry of Heavy Industries had fruitful
dialogues with the Japanese government as well as business officials. The
officials went to Japan upon the invitation of Japan's Suzuki Automobile
Company. They discussed coordination concerns regarding the assembly of
Suzuki cars in Myanmar.

The officials discussed the bilateral industrial cooperation between
Myanmar and Japan including a construction of technical training school in
upper Myanmar with the Japanese assistance and the sending of more Myanmar
industrial scholars to Japan under Japanese scholarship.

Bilateral industrial cooperation was also on high agenda during the meeting
between Myanmar Heavy Industries Minister and officials of Japan's Overseas
Development Corporation and Japan International Cooperation Agency.

The officials during their stay in Japan met with the officials of Japan's
External Trade Organization (JETRO), which has business representative
offices in Yangon to promote Japan-Myanmar trade. 
       
1102-02 Thanlyin Refinery To Produce Bitumen
**The Thanlyin Refinery, about 30 minutes drive from Yangon, is planning to
produce more bitumen this year. The Thanlyin Refinery falls under the
supervision of the Myanma Petrochemical Enterprise.

The refinery is buying more vacuum residue for the production of rod
bitumen. The refinery has the potentials of producing over 25,000 metric
tons of high quality fuel annually.

1102-03 Korea Joins Myanmar Border Area Development
**Officials of Korea's Border Area Development Corporation and Yangon based
Korean entrepreneurs held discussion with the officials of Myanmar Border
Area Development Department in Yangon on 30th October.

The Koreans assured Myanmar of giving technical assistance for the
development of Myanmar's border areas agricultural and transport sector.

1102-04 Regional Collaboration On Ecosystem Conservation
**The Myanmar Forest Department and scientists from China and India
representing the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development
(ICIMOD) held an ecosystem workshop. This centered on collaboration on
ecosystem conservation of Hkakaborazi Mountain, the highest mountain in
Myanmar (about 19,296 ft above sea level). This mountain, which is over
5,800 meters high, is situated in Myanmar's northern Kachin province. 
     
The Hkakaborazi Mountain ecosystem is endowed with unique and rich
biological diversity and covers the headwater of Myanmar's vital Ayeyarwady
River.

The workshop also adopted conservation and management strategies for
developing of Hkakaborazi National Park as well as for the development of
socio-economic situation of the region.  

Myanmar's Forest Department is also undertaking the forest and wildlife
conservation work in 13 of others Myanmar's ecologically rich sites.

1102-05 Thailand In Myanmar's Energy Sector
**Myanmar's Energy Minister met on 31st October with the visiting former
Finance Minister and Chairman of PTT Exploration and Production Public
Company of Thailand in Yangon.

Myanmar is currently supplying natural gas via submarine pipelines from the
exploration sites in the southern Myanmar Gulf of Mottama.       

1102-06 Companies In Brief
**Every Tuesday Myabuzz will include news about companies operating in
Myanmar. These may be trivia or information about the companies' businesses
in the country:

1. Myanmar Forest Products Joint Venture Company announced last week 30%
dividend on profits to its shareholders. Last year the company made the
annual net profit of 3,00 million (nearly US$ 1 million).

2 A Yangon-based leading Singaporean Consultancy and accounting firm,
Morison Int'l held its annual conference in Yangon last week. Myanmar's top
officials and leading businessmen discussed the country's economic
development and further investment opportunities at the opening day session
of the conference. The conference also highlighted rules and regulations
for the setting up of companies in Myanmar as well as to give greater
emphasis in bringing out more statisticians and administrators in country.

3. Myanmar's leading private bank the Asia Wealth Bank (AWB) last week
established its 32nd branch office in Lashio, about 700 km northeast of
Yangon. The bank claims to have total deposit money of over Kyats 80
billion (about US$250 million)

4. Last week Myanmar celebrated the 'End Of Buddhist Lent' festival
nationwide. Usually during this period, Myanmar business offer sales and
discounts. 

5. Yangon-based Myanmar Singh Ltd introduced new heart monitor machine,
'Pacemaker' to Myanmar market last week. The company invited Myanmar
Physicians at its demonstration held in Yangon's Traders Hotel.

6. Last weekend Japanese film company Konica introduced its latest
photographic film "Centuria" to Myanmar market.
