Independence November Issue Out

Independence, the independent monthly paper by Shan Herald Agency for =
News,=20
is out today.

The paper is published in three languages: Shan, Burmese and English. It =
is=20
supported by the National Endowment for Democracy (NED) and Open Society =

Institute (OSI).

This latest issue features the battle of Tangyan, fought in 1959, by the =

incipient Shan resistance movement, and how it influenced thousands of =
Shan=20
youth to join the ranks.

Another feature is Surkhanfah, the Shan emperor (1311-64), known as the=20
Shans' Genghis Khan. Romans may boast of Romulus and Remus being raised =
by a she-wolf, but the Shans are not ready to be outshone, because their =
hero=20
was believed to brought up by a white tiger.

But believe it or not, Surkhanfah and his twin brother, Sarmlongfah, are =

heroes whom today's Shan youth tries to emulate.

It is, for those who want to understand what makes the Shans tick, an=20
important piece to read.

We therefore urge readers who have not yet subscribed to Independence to =
