Myanmar-Malaysia bilateral trade drops 

Xinhua, Yangon, 10 November 1999.    Bilateral trade between Myanmar
and Malaysia amounted to 116.76 million U.S. dollars in the first half
of this year, a drop of 1.56 percent over the same period of last year when 
it was 118.62 million dollars.

Of the total, Myanmar's imports from Malaysia were valued at 87.74 million 
dollars, down 15.12 percent from 103.37 million dollars in the corresponding 
period of last year, the Official Economic Indicators said in its latest
issue. 

During the half-year period, Myanmar's exports to Malaysia stood at
29.02 million dollars, increasing by 90.29 percent over a year earlier. 

The indicators also show that in 1998, the two countries' bilateral trade 
reached 280.27 million dollars, of which Myanmar's imports totaled 
226.47 million dollars while its exports to Malaysia accounted for 53.8 
million dollars. 

In the past five years, Myanmar brought in 533 million dollars' investment 
from Malaysia in 22 projects, making Malaysia the third biggest investor 
in the country, after Singapore and Thailand,  among the member countries 
of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.
