Illegal workers key factor in Aids spread
Infection rate among Burmese 'alarming'

The unrelenting migration of illegal foreign workers is a significant factor
in
the spread of HIV/Aids in Southeast Asia, an Asean conference was told.
The theory was presented at a workshop on population movement and HIV/Aids,
attended by more than 50 representatives from Brunei, Cambodia, China, Laos,
Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
Delegates were told cross-border movements of illegal workers was a major
contributor to the spread of the infection as most lacked safe-sex awareness.
Deputy Health Minister Kamron na Lamphun said the rate of infection among
Burmese workers is alarming.
In an official survey, about 4% of sex workers in Chiang Rai tested positive,
nearly all of them foreigners.
Mr Kamron said stricter controls on illegal workers and systematic
repatriation
could help prevent the spread of the virus in Thailand.
