when Burmese students clashed with Thai officials at the Maneeloy holding
centre yesterday following an incident on Monday in which a local
resident shot a Burmese student who allegedly tried to steal his ducks.
The shooting angered the students at the centre who charged that there
was a conspiracy among Thai officials to paint them in bad light.
About 200 policemen and volunteers were mobilised at the holding centre
following the clash which involved about 20 students and a number of
officials. One student was seriously injured and sent to the Pak Thor
Hospital. The Thai officials suffered no major injuries.
Police said the students were protesting against the shooting of Than Min
Oo who was wounded while he and three other inmates of the holding centre
were allegedly trying to steal a villager's ducks. Tension mounted
between the protesters and officials patrolling the centre and a clash
broke out, police said.
