Thai Camp Guards Clash With Myanmar Student Exiles
BANGKOK (AP)--Thai guards at a border holding center fired in the air =
during a clash with exiled students from Myanmar, the latest incident in =
worsening tensions at the camp.=20
It was unclear whether anyone was injured in Tuesday night's clash. =
Student representatives complained that at least one dissident was shot. =

Thai officials acknowledged that a student was in a hospital with a =
gunshot wound, but claimed it was inflicted by a farmer who caught the =
student stealing a duck the day before.=20

"These incidents turn into bigger trouble because all of the villagers =
hate the Burmese students in the camp," said Komet Daengthongdee, =
governor Ratchaburi province.=20

The 1,000-plus students have come under increasing scrutiny since last =
month, when five armed student activists stormed Myanmar's embassy in =
Bangkok and took 38 people hostage for a day.=20

The military government in Myanmar, also known as Burma, closed its long =
border with Thailand in anger after Thai officials let the =
hostage-takers go free to avoid bloodshed.=20

The hostage-takers were suspected of having some links with the Maneeloy =
holding center and Thailand has stepped up camp security. The students =
say they are being made scapegoats.=20

Komet said that Tuesday's clash started when a student who had sneaked =
out of the camp returned heavily drunk, wearing a pistol at his waist.=20

The student refused to hand the pistol and a row ensued. More students =
came to help out their friend, ultimately numbering 200, and guards =
fired shots into the air as a warning, Komet said.=20
