Children's Special Intensive Care Unit Opened at Meiktila District 
Hospital

    A ceremony to open Children's Special Intensive Care Unit of Meiktila 
District Hospital, donated by Association of Medical Doctors of Asia (AMDA),
Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, Sankei Company and Japanese and Myanmar 
well-wishers, was held in the compound of the hospital on 13 November. The
Children's Special Intensive Care Unit, 140 feet long and 60 feet wide and 
has 19 rooms. The Government has formed National Health Committee since 1989 
with a
view to uplifting the standard of health of the people; the national health 
policy was laid down and is being implemented;- therefore, the health standard
of the people, especially of the people from remote
border areas is improving significantly. Over the past
ten years, the Government has spent over K 211 million
on building hospitals, clinics and rural health care
centres in the border areas; during the period from
1989 to 1999, the health expenditure for the entire
country totalled K 21 billion.
