Thai foreign minister leaves for Yangon on mission to repair ties
Thai Foreign Minister Surin Pitsuwan left Tuesday for a one-day trip to =
Yangon aimed at salvaging bilateral relations.
Relations between the two neighbours have been strained since gunmen =
seized the Myanmar embassy in Bangkok last month.
During his visit, Mr Surin will hold talks with his Myanmar counterpart, =
Win Aung, and Lieutenant General Khin Nyunt, first secretary of the =
ruling junta.
It is hoped the visit will ease tensions between the two ASEAN =
countries.
Relations have soured since five armed student exiles stormed Myanmar's =
embassy in Bangkok last month.
Thirty-eight people in the embassy were held hostage for a day before =
Thailand agreed to let them go to avoid bloodshed.=20
But Myanmar's military regime was angered that Thailand let off the =
students so lightly, accusing Bangkok of coddling with terrorists.
In retaliation Myanmar closed the border between the two countries -- =
disrupting trade, fishing and the deportation of illegal labourers in =
Thailand.
Myanmar had earlier said that the border would not be opened until the =
hostage-takers were arrested.=20
