Human rights prizes for Min Ko Nain



Subject: Human rights prizes for Min Ko Naing and San San Nwe

Dear all,

Two of the prisoners on whose behalf AI groups are working will receive awards in award ceremonies tomorrow in Montreal on Paris for their contribution to the advancement of human rights.
Min Ko Naing, (aka Paw U Tun),the student leader worked on by Italy 35 and USA 379 has received the International Centre for Human Rights and Democratic Development's John Humphrey Freedom Award for 1999, which is presented each year to a non-governmental organization or an individual for their exceptional achievement in the promotion of human rights and/or democratic development.  
Dr. Cynthia Maung, an ethnic Karen doctor in exile who runs a clinic on the Thai/Burmese border treating refugees has also been given the award, which will be presented in a ceremony in Montreal tomorrow.

Daw San San Nwe, a prisoner of conscience who is being  worked on by  Sweden 155, Netherlands 470 and Canada Fre 36,  has been awarded the Reporters without Borders (Reporters Sans Frontières) Fondation de France award, which is granted to a journalist who, through his or her work or attitudes, have demonstrated devotion to the cause of freedom of expression (for more information see http://www.rsf.fr). There will be a ceremony in Paris tomorrow to give this to her in absentia. 
Daw San San Nwe is reportedly suffering from liver problems and eye disease, and U Win Tin is reportedly dying: however we have not been able to verify these reports.
