                      From Seattle to Sydney

A brief history lesson on sport for the junta?

It was so nice to see him on our tvs tonight.
Along with the very best of rugby, Gareth Davis
and the Barbarians.

The gittering occasion is the BBC's Sportsperson
of the Millennium. And of course who is waiting in
the wings? Muhamed Ali, who sits ill and of all
great people, speechless beside our new world
heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis..

I regret few things in life. But how well I remember
brushing past Ali in Archer Street in the swinging 60s..
And how I wished now that even as a jazz musician,
I had not been intimidated by the presence of his two
even bigger bodyguards and once recognising him,
had said a Salaam comrade and welcome.

A few days later our Henry, Henry Cooper landed a left
hook that for the first time in his life, floored Ali to a
Wembley canvas. And the media went apesht!

Our Dr Wiliams?
He sets an example as one of the greatest men of
true sport to us all does JPR. Why? T'was JPR
who on the politically infamous British Lions tour of
S Africa. When the referees whistle blew on that far
flown and racist field of fairplay and when the ball
shot into the air. Condemned by the media along with
all the rest of the touring Lions. JPR charged the whole
length of the field and and looping along in his wide
strides which was typical of the man, threw a devastating
Welsh right hook at his opposite (white) number. The
racist Springbok's full back. Whom, somwhat suprised
by this Welshmans "flaunting of rules", quivered for a
moment and then slowly sunk to the grass.

"Hey JPR, what was running through your mind that day?"
There was a pause and a Welsh voice said.

"Well Roger, it wasn't my greatest moment in rugby. But we
were all out there to do it. So I thought I'd get in first."

There he was again tonight, on our Brit tvs, a picture of a
perfect "man of peace", integrity, and letters, face covered in
his own blood from yet another punch up with the rugby playing
English. And ready for more. Along with HH and DASSK, a great
person to have on any great team.

Especially one like ours huh?
