Le Monde Editorial 17 dec 99, attac

Subject: Le Monde Editorial 17 dec 99, attacks Total Fina (Erika oil spill, capitalism of the oceans)

Given the fact that the French dont know really how to deal with Total
Fina, buy the stock, denounce it, pay high taxed gas, denounce it,
accept the monopoly, denounce it, the contradictions and back stepping
is insipid and endless. Still, in todays Le Monde national daily, the
editoiral blares "Le capitalisme et la mer". Once again it hits at the
bombasted french arrogance, and says the French government "la France",
should be more modest and not try to give lessons, given the fact that
its sea fleet ranks a poor 28th in the world, there are few inspectors
for ship security, and, here in the paper, i am surprised to read, as it
would seem possible cause for defammation, or libel law suit, Le Monde
claims that Total Fina "is trying to elude its responsibilities, adding
a dose of scandal to the sentiment of revolt...we have the right to ask
if Total Fina, the one who gives the orders (to the captain of the ship
sic) has not committed a fault of imprudence or of negligence".

Well, its not Burma, its a sea spill. But the oil is all over Total Fina
and all over the face of Desmarest.

And thats just really too bad, isnt it.
