greater responsibilities
YANGON, 4 Jan - The following is a translation of the message sent by Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Senior General Than Shwe on the occasion of the 52nd Anniversary Independence Day today.
On the auspicious and momentous occasion of the 52nd Anniversary Independence Day of the Union of Myanmar I extend my greetings- with amity and esteem for all the nations people residing in the country.
For thousands of years Myanmar had been in existence grandly as an independent and sovereign nation with own monarchs, own nationality, own language and own culture.
Myanmar ancestors were truly the ones who evolved and developed on Myanmar land and waters in successive stages through Stone Age, Bronze Age, Iron Age and Glaze Age since some 40 million years ago, the time of formation of primate fossils which we have found.
The Myanmars founded the wellknown Pyu Period from AD 1st to AD 9th Century, Bagan Period from AD 10th to AD 13th Century, Pinya Myinsaing Period from AD 13th to AD 14th Century, Sagaing Period in 14tb Century, Innwa Period from AD 14th to AD 16th Century, Toungoo Period from 15th to 16th Century, Nyaungyan Period from AD 17th to 18th Century and Konbaung Period from AD18th to AD19th Century prestigiously.
Many concrete and rich evidences have been placed on record in the long history that Myanmars are people who have successively inherited and preserved the pride of their origin and lineage with heroic spirit. They fought back against the lawless aggression of the colonialist forces with bitterness, unyielding spirit and the determination- not to give up even when only the hull is left.
The colonialists waged three aggressive wars, once in 1824, then in 1854 and finally in 1885, against Myanmar and occupied her.
The entire mass of the people and energetic heroes regained Independence after launching military, political and economic wars from 1824 to 1948 and Myanmar became a sovereign nation. We must always pay tribute to the national race heroic leaders, youths, monks and the people who by the thousands or even tens of thousands sacrificed their lives throughout the history of the independence struggle.
A study of the history through which the people of Myanmar had traversed we will find that we valiantly confronted and fought without fail the internal national traitors and the dangers of destruction of the external aggressors, who begrudged us and were merely self-centred, conspiring and attempting to cause destruction to the nation in which all the national races of the Union were residing together sharing joy and sorrow. Victorious instances throughout history are witness to the fact that we possessed dynamic strength to overcome the difficulties and won battles we had confronted and we had been able to build Myanma society anew.
Today, when the independence of the nation is 52 years old, all the national races must keep in mind that it is our inborn duty to discharge what we are entrusted with enhancing the spirit of national solidarity, nationalist spirit and the love for the Union and with the spirit of sacrificing lives in safeguarding independence and sovereignty of the motherland in order that national independence that was regained would not be lost again.
At the present time the 21st Century has begun, Myanmar has learnt lessons of great value from the 20th Century to build the nation anew. We are working for the perpetuation of the Union of Myanmar and building a new, peaceful, modern and developed nation. Our Three Main National Causes based on these familiar lessons have already been laid down, which are to be upheld firmly and steadfastly at present and in future. All the citizens are to firmly have the courage which inspires them to unflinchingly strive for materialization of Our Three Main National Causes-non-disintegration of the Union, non-disintegration of national solidarity and perpetuation of sovereignty-with full patrio-tism.
On behalf of all the national races of the Union, the National Convention is working without losing sight of drawing up an enduring State Constitution which can guarantee Our Three Main Nationa1 Causes. It is imperative to oppose and remove with the peoples might the destructive danger of the terrorist and destructive group heading for utter devastation and attempting to cause deviation from the right course in implementing the 12 national objectives, and neo-colonialists from abroad.
The national people are cohesively and unitedly participating in practically implementing projects and special projects, in building river-crossing bridges in each state and division, in improving means of transport, in making preparations for discipline-flourishing democracy, and in striving for the improvement of social skill such as national culture, national arts, national education and national health with a view to ensuring the development of agriculture and production work, which reflect the already achieved stability and peace and tranquility of the State and economic, food, clothing and shelter conditions of national people.
We formed the Union Solidarity and Development Association by mobilizing the strength of the new generation citizens. Included in the seven future tasks laid down at the 1998 Annual General Meeting of the Union Solidarity and Development Association is the fact that members of the association are to personally take part in striving for the development of the nation. The work programmes of the association are the constructive work programmes, which oppose and remove destructive-acts and contribute towards the interests of the people. So, we have to put on record the endeavours of the Union Solidarity and Development Associations at different levels from every Part of the country including all cities, towns, villages and hill regions.
Our Union of Myanmar is not only a member of the United Nations but also a member of the Association of South-East Asian Nations and it is participating in the affairs of the Asia and the world on an equal footing with other nations by firmly upholding the five principles of peaceful co-existence.
In marching towards a new, peaceful, modern and developed nation, all the national youths born in the Union who are going to shoulder the duties, together with the Tatmadaw, are to build a strong national force full of ,physical and intellectual capabilities without fail through unity. Therefore, all the national people are urged to take on greater responsibility unitedly and energetically, keeping in mind that the discharging of this historically assigned duty hinges on the dynamic Union Spirit, patriotism and national pride of all our national people.

(3) Plans under way to develop Ngwehsaung Beach in
Pathein to become eco-tourism resort
YANGON, 3 Jan - Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye inspected Kaingshe Bridge Project in Taungup Township and Ngwehsaung Beach in Pathein Township on 2 and 3 January.
On arrival at Taungup, they were welcomed by Tactical Operations Commander and personnel concerned.
At Kaingshe Bridge Project, the General heard a report on points of the project presented by Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun and officials.
The General gave counsel.
Located on Taungup-An-Kyaukpyu Road, the bridge will link Taungup with Kyaukpyu and An which are major towns in southern Rakhine State. The bailey bridge is 540 feet long and 36 feet wide.
The main bridge is completed up to 70 per cent and the approach road 60 per cent.
After inspecting the project, the General and party helicoptered to Thandwe Township.
They were welcomed by Director of Military Engineers Brig-Gen Win Aung Tint and officials.
The next morning, they attended a ceremony to offer soon to sarthintaiks in Thandwe Township which was held at Sasana Beikman.
Sayadaw Bhaddanta Nandaminju of Nandawtaung Kyaungtaik administered the Five Precepts.
Commander Maj-Gen Aung Htwe supplicated on religious matters.
General Maung Aye presented rice and other provisions to Patron of Maha Bawdi Sarthintaik Sayadaw Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta Indaka
Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo and officials presented rice and other provisions to Sayadaws.
Sayadaw Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta Indaka delivered a sermon.
The congregation shared the merits gained.
In Gwa Township, the General and party heard a report on town development task presented by officials.
On arrival at Ngwehsaung Beach in Pathein Township, the General and party were welcomed by Secretary-3 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Win Myint, member of State Peace and Development Council Chairman of.Ayeyawady Division Peace and Development Council Commander of South West Command Maj-Gen Thura Shwe Mann, departmental personnel and entrepreneurs.
The Secretary-3 briefed them on location of the beach, its natural beauties and plans to develop eco-tourism at the beach by national entrepreneurs.
Commander Maj-Gen Thura Shwe Mann explained plans to render assistance by Ayeyawady Division Peace and Development Council.
General Maung Aye said the beach will be developed into a resort for tourists as well as local visitors.
A master plan will be drawn for the beach resort to be of international standard. Efforts are required for completion of the tasks to build roads to the beach and the beach resort project. Special attention must be paid to preserving its environs.
After cordially greeting national entrepreneurs, the General inspected maps and charts of the project.
Eighteen national entrepreneurs will undertake the task in developing the nine-mile long beach.
The beach can be reached through Pathein-Thalutkhwa-Ngwehsaung Road. It is six-hour drive from Yangon.
The General and party arrived back here in the afternoon.

(4) 52nd Anniversary Independence Day Exhibition opens
YANGON, 3 Jan - The opening ceremony of the 52nd Anniversary Independence Day Exhibition for year 2000 was held in front of the Tatmadaw Convention Hall on U Wisara Road this morning, attended by Chairman of the Central Committee for Observance of the 52nd Anniversary Independence Day Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.
Associations in Yangon Division, heads of departments and Chairman of the 52nd Anniversary Independence Day Exhibition Work Committee and members, officials, students and guests.
Chairman of the 52nd Anniversary Independence Day Exhibition Work Committee Deputy Minister for Information Brig-Gen Aung Thein formally opened the exhibition.
The Secretary-1 and guests observed booths of private and ministries displayed at the exhibition.

Use of changing, advancing communication, information technologies for the betterment of nation, people stressed Prize-distribution ceremony of outstanding students for 1999-2000 academic year held
YANGON, 3 Jan - The 1999-2000 academic year School Family Day of the Ministry of Education was observed at Diamond Jubilee Hall on Pyay Road this afternoon, with an address by Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.
The prize-distribution ceremony of outstanding students for 1999-2000 academic year commenced by playing the National Anthem.
Basic education students sang songs, sone-nyi-pwe-daw-doh-hnwe-pyaw and bet-sone-hsin-hnwe-hsu-hnin-pwe.
Then, Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt presented prizes to 10th Standard students for their outstanding performance in all-round-development for 1999-2000 academic year.
Afterwards, the Secretary-l posed for documentary photo with the prize winning students.

(5) Secretary-l attends opening of Mingalar Market Branch of
Kanbawza Bank Ltd
YANGON, 3 Jan - A ceremony to mark the opening of Mingalar Market Branch of Kanbawza Bank Ltd and to donate cash for Myanma selection soccer team was held in Yuzana Plaza Hall on Banyadala Road this morning.
Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt made a speech and accepted donations.

Afterward, the Secretary-1 accepted K 10 million donated for development of Myanmar selected soccer team by Chairman of Kanbawza Bank Ltd U Aung Ko Win and wife Thiri Thudhamma Theingi Thiha Thudhamma Theingi Daw Nang Than Htwe and family.
The Secretary-1 also lauded the donations for development of Myanma selected soccer team, and called for assistance and encouragement of the people to make sure that Myanma soccer team achieves success.
After the ceremony, the Secretary-1 inspected the banking services of Mingalar Market Branch-of Kanbawza Bank Ltd.

(6) Marching demonstration of outstanding students
on School Family Day held
YANGON, 3 Jan - The marching demonstration of outstanding students for 1999-2000 academic year School Family Day was-held at the facade of National Indoor Stadium-l in Thuwunna, Thingangyun Township this morning, attended by Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary- 1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.
The marching demonstration of outstanding students began with the dance of 200 girl students from No 2 Basic Education High School in Kamayut Township.
Boy students from No 6 BEHS in Botahtaung Township, girl students from No 2 BEHS in Sangyoung Township, No 4 BEHS in Botahtaung and outstanding students in the eighth standard marched.
Band troupes from No 4 BEHS, Ahlon Township, No 1 BEHS in Dagon, No 2 BEHS in Thingangyun, No 2 BEHS in Hlinethaya, No 7 BEMS in Hline Township played marching song and Myanma-kyaung song.
Outstanding students in the tenth standard of Basic Education Middle School (Myoma Kyauktan) in the 1999-2000 academic year marched.
Next, outstanding students who stood from first to tenth positions in 1999 Matriculation Examination marched. Band troupes from No1 BEHS in Hmawby Township, Institute of Education Practising High School and No 4 BEHS in Thakayta played songs.
Students who won prizes at Pyinnya Tazaung Literary Competition marched and band troupes from No1 BEHS in Dalla, No 2 BEHS in Kamayut played songs.
Students who won prizes at basic education level composing and music competition of Myanma Traditional Performing Arts Competitions marched.
Band troupes from No3 BEHS in Mingala Taungnyunt, Yankin Education College Practising Middle School, No 9 BEPS in Sangyoung and No2 BEHS in Latha played songs.
The second session was held at the National Indoor Stadium-1.
Students from primary, middle and high schools in various townships in Yangon Division demonstrated thaing and sports skills and physical exercises and sang songs performed and dances.

(7) Daw Kyaing Kyaing attends School Family Day ceremony
of Yangon Institute of Education Practising School
YANGON, 3 Jan - The second School Family Day ceremony, the prize presentation ceremony and variety dances of the Institute of Education Practising School were held in the hall of the school this morning.
Present on the occasion were Daw Kyaing Kyaing, wife of Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Senior General Than Shwe.
First, students presented variety dances.
Then, Daw Kyaing, Kyaing, Daw Mya Mya San, Daw Khin Than Nwe, Daw Win Kyi, Daw Marlar Tint, Deputy Minister U Myo Nyunt and officials presented prizes to outstanding students.

(8) 149 Rathedaung NLD members resign of their own accord
YANGON, 3 Jan - A ceremony to submit resignations of 149 members of Rathedaung Township National League for Democracy, Rakhine State, was held at the office of Rathedaung Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission at I pm on 29 December 1999.
A total of 149 NLD members of Rathedaung Township, Rakhine State, of their own accord, sent letters of resignation to the party concerned as they no longer wished to participate in the party politics of NLD. On 29 December 1999, a ceremony to collectively submit the resignations of Rathedaung Township NLD members was held at the office of Rathedaung Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission.
Township NLD member U Maung Hla Thein explained about the reason of resignation and presented resignation letters to Chairman of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission U Shwe Mann.
