People Forced To Pay For streetlights

People from a Shan town near the Chinese border are being forced to pay=20
up-keep for streetlights to two different government agencies, reported=20
Hawmaohurng on New Year's Day.

Citizens of Namkham, 129 miles north of Lashio, the Shan State's =
northern=20
capital, were ordered by its Mayor U Thaw Htun San to pay K-200 per=20
household monthly to the municipality beginning November 1999. This was =
in=20
addition to payment to the township electricity supply board at the rate =
of=20
K.100 per household per month.

" Besides, the order reminded the people that in the event that they=20
refused to pay, the municipality would employ every means possible to =
get=20
the money from them," said the source to Hawmaohurng. "We therefore have =
no=20
choice but to comply with their wishes."

Namkham has 3,463 registered households.

Junta Cuts Down Number of Toll Gates

Trucks transporting goods between Mandalay and Muse, the Shan State town =

opposite China's Ruili, would go through scrutiny from only two customs=20
gates now, reported Hawmaohurng from Lashio on 30 December.

In accordance with the decisions made at Muse on 15 December, trucks=20
running between Muse and Mandalay would not have to undergo inspections =
at=20
all the four gates between the two cities anymore.

" All trucks will be inspected at each end and sealed afterwards which=20
shall not be opened until it reaches the other end," said Hawmaohurng.

"It will save us some money now that we only have to pay two gates =
instead=20
of four," said a truck driver to Hawmaohurng. "But we cannot be too =
happy=20
in a hurry. Because they might still have something else up their =
sleeves=20
to shake us down."

The distance of the two cities is 287 miles.
