A MEDIA report that the Ministry of Labour and
Social Welfare (MOLSW) would import one million Burmese workers was
incorrect, a member of the Sub-committee on Solving Foreign Labour
Problems said yesterday.
Following the sub-committee's meeting on Wednesday, there was a news
report that the MOLSW had decided to import one million Burmese workers.
However, there was no such resolution at the meeting, said Pol Maj Gen
Charnwut Watcharaphuk, deputy immigration police commissioner and member
of the sub-committee.
Instead, the sub-committee reviewed issues that Thai government
representatives would discuss with their Burmese counterparts when they
meet to discuss illegal Burmese workers in Thailand, Charnwut said.
MOLSW could legally import foreign workers from any country if it wanted
to, said Don Pramudwinai, spokesman for the Foreign Affairs Ministry.
However, if MOLSW really wanted to import Burmese workers it would
contact the Burmese government via the Foreign Affairs Ministry, Don
said.
So far, his ministry had not received any such inquiry.
