(1) Plans Under Way to Uplift Higher Education Sector to Meet Developing
South-East Asian Nation' Standard
Myanmar Education Committee held its meeting 1/2000 at Yangon
Universities Central Council on 7 January. The government expenditure on
education and health sectors is the largest in the nation next to that of the
road and bridge sector. The government is making harmonious efforts for
uplifting the education sector to meet the international standard and for the
flourishing of all-round education based on Myanmar culture starting from the
primary level, achieving progress which is not lower than that of the
developed nations of South-East Asia. As a member nation of ASEAN, Myanmar
has become essential to promote the entire education sector for the
flourishing of an education system which is at par with other ASEAN nations.
As a first step taken in promoting the higher education sector, learning
centres have been set up at open universities; and the Ministry of Education
and the Ministry of Information are launching joint plans to introduce
information technology, the computer network system and the satellite data
broadcasting system in the sector.
(2) Special Refresher Course No 3 for Judicial Officers Opens
A ceremony to open Special Refresher Course No 3 for Judicial Officers
was held at the Central Institute of Civil Service in Yangon on 7 January.
The opening of the course is aimed for judicial officers to properly carry
out administration of justice and to have high moral character so that they
can cohesively and effectively implement the basic principles on
administration of justice. Altogether 245 trainees are attending the course
which will last six weeks.
(3) IPRD Chief Editor Leaves for India
Chief Editor of Information and Public Relations Department, Ministry of
Information left Yangon by air on 7 January to attend international
conference of travelogue writers to be held in Lucknow, India. Travelogue
writers from 25 nations will attend the three-week conference to be sponsored
by the Ministry of Tourism of India.
(4) Yangon Airways Honours 500,000th Passenger
Officials concerned of Yangon Airways presented a silver plaque to honour
A. Matsumoo, the 500,000th passenger to check in at Yangon Airway' departure
counter. Amillennium gift is also presented to Daw San San Oo who was the
first passenger to check in on the 1st day of the new Millennium. Yangon
Airways currently operate to Bagan, Mandalay, Heho, Tacheleik, Kengtung and
Thandwe from Yangon.
(5) Two Men Arrested with Stimulant Tablets in Monghsu
A team comprising members of the regional Defence Services Intelligence
unit and Myanmar Police Force arrested two men with 15,411 stimulant tablets
Monghsu Township, Shan State, on 21 December. The authorities, acting on a
tip-off, searched the restaurant and seized the drugs from the two men-- Nyi
Laing of Mongmaw, and Aik Khwet Hopan. Action is being taken
against the two under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law.
