(1) Health Research Paper Reading Session Opens
Health Research Paper Reading Session of the Ministry of Health was
opened at the Institute of Nursing (Yangon) on 10 January with an address by
Chairman of National Health Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and
Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt. Also present were ministers, senior
officials, personnel of social organizations, directors-general, rectors,
advisors, deputy directors-general,
professors, directors and medical superintendents of the Ministry of Health,
researchers, resource persons and guests. In his address the Secretary-1
stated
that ?health research paper reading sessions are held every year as a result
of efforts of health researchers and they contribute much to the efforts of
the Government for development of medical science and providing sufficient
health care services to national people. Arrangements have been made to
extend
hospitals and dispensaries, turn out proficient doctors, nurses and
midwives, to enhance efficiency of hospitals and dispensaries and to provide
efficacious
medicine and modern medical equipment and to fill vacancies for specialists.
Medical seminars and workshop are being held, institutes have been
established to produce nurses and mid wives and encouragement is being given
to enable scholars and doctors to continue their studies.
As the first step of plans for the progress of health research the Health
Research Department ( Lower Myanmar) and the Health Research Department (
Upper
Myanmar) were organized. The two departments should extend research in
teaching, treatment and health care to enable the health research work to
cover the
entire Myanmar. Medical experts and researchers should uplift their
education and skills to fulfil the requirements of the 21st Century. Health
research should be conducted to ensure effectiveness in solving health
related problems, efficiency in
using the nation?s human resources, emergence of quality health care services
and equity among all the people of towns, villages, hills, plains, the rich
and the poor in enjoying health care services. Attention is to be paid to the
development of research work which will solve the health problems in accord
with Myanmar traditions and culture and Myanmar nature. While accepting
sincere assistance from friendly
countries and international non-government organizations, all should strive
for conducting research on selfreliance basis?.
(2) Seminar on Business Development of Fishery Cooperatives in Myanmar Held
The Seminar on Business Development of Fishery Cooperatives in Myanmar
jointly organized by InternationalCooperative Fisheries Organization(ICFO)of
International Cooperative Alliance and the Central Cooperative Society of
Myanmar was held at the Traders Hotel in Yangon on 10 January. Present on
the occasion were Ministers , Deputy Minister , Minister Mr. Yoshihiko Kamo
of the Japanese Embassy, directors-general and managing directors of
departments and enterprises under the Ministry of Cooperatives, officials of
the Central Cooperative Society, Mr. Masaaki Sato and officials of ICA and
ICFO, officials of fisheries cooperative
societies and guests. The cooperative movement in Myanmar started in 1905
with the thrift and loan society in Myinmu, in the upper part of the
country. It was one of the first cooperatives to be set up, with the
objective of providing for the well-being
of members. With that trend, more and more cooperatives were formed and in
1946 the first fishery cooperative was established in Ayeyawady Division.
Apart from national fulfillment endeavours, the cooperatives were able to
export 1,517.48 metric
tons of fish to the value of about 4.1 million US dollars in 1997-98, In
98-99 the cooperatives were able to export about 1,361.72 metric tons of
fish to the value of about 3.02 million US dollar. The seminar will be
held up to 13 January. Papers related to the development of fishery
cooperatives in Myanmar will be presented to the seminar.
(3) Minister Leaves for the Philippines
Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman?s Office
Brig-Gen Abel left Yangon by air on 10 January to attend the Ninth
Ministerial Level
Economic Cooperation Meeting of six countries in the Mekong Region in Manila,
the Philippines, from 11 to 13 January.
(4) Minister for Health Receives WHO Senior Regional Advisers
Minister for Health received Senior Regional Adviser ( Malaria) Dr. Orlov
and Regional Adviser ( Essential Drugs) Dr. Kin Shein of South East Asia
Regional Director?s Office of World Health Organization together with
WHO Resident
Representative Dr. Agostino Borra at his office on 10 January.
(5) Myanma Posts and Telecommunications Opens Courses
Facsimile Operator Training Course, EWSD Engineering Course, Basic PCM
Course and basic machinery maintenance course were opened at
Telecommunication and Postal Training Centre of Myanma Posts and
Telecommunications under the Ministry of Communications, Posts and Telegraphs
on 10 January. Myanma Posts and Telecommunications is making efforts
to improve communication system throughout the nation and to be able to
apply advanced communication technology.
(6) Workshop on Preservation of Movable Cultural Heritage for the Future
Guidance
Workshop on preservation of movable cultural heritage for the future
guidance organized by Universities Historical Research Department was held
at Yangon University on 10 January. The workshop continues on 11 January.
(7) Basic Course on GATT Valuation Agreement Begins
Basic Training Course No 8 on the GATT Valuation Agreement of the
Customs Department of the Ministry of Finance and Revenue opened on 10
January at Customs Training School. Myanmar is a member of ASEAN as well as
World Trade Organization (WTO) and it has agreed to use the GATT valuation
system. Forty trainees are attending the two-week course.
(8) Indian Cultural Dance Troupe Arrives
Under the bilateral cultural exchange programme, a 14 member cultural
dance troupe of India arrived Yangon by air on 9 January. The Indian
cultural troupe will
present dances at the National Theatre in Yangon on 11 and 12 January.
