(1) Duties assigned to beans and pulses cultivation
areas including Sagaing Division to extend
      pedisein, matpe and pesinngon cultivation

YANGON, 12 Jan-Vice-Chairman of the State Peace
and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief
of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army)
General Maung Aye met officials, farmers and
entrepreneurs at North-West Command in Monywa
yesterday.

In addressing members of Sagaing Division Peace
and Development Council, division-level officials,
officials of Sagaing, Shwebo, Monywa, Kalay and
Katha Districts and 20 townships, industrialists
and entrepreneurs, the General said nations with
their respective objectives are striving with
added momentum for economic progress starting from
the New Year.

It is required to accelerate the momentum of
economic development of Myanmar. It is now in the
fourth year of the five-year short-term economic
plan which began in 1996-97. The nation is
gaining success in implementing the economic plan,
hoping to achieve more progress than the estimated
economic development rate. If all continue to
strive with greater momentum in the fiscal
2000-2001 which is the final year of the economic
plan the nation will be able to keep abreast with
the developing neighbors.

Thus, harmonious efforts are required for the
nation's agricultural and industrial sectors to
gain more development.

Arrangements are in progress in extending
cultivation of paddy which is the nation' s main
crop. Extra impetus is being given in putting 18
million acres under paddy 14 million acres under
monsoon paddy and four million acres under summer
paddy and in raising per acre yield to reach 100
baskets.

Such efforts to extend paddy cultivation will
ensure adequate food for the nation till the
population reaches 100 million mark and to export
the surplus produce.Similarly, cultivation of
cotton, sugarcane, beans and corn are being
extended as the main ,crops of the nation. Due to
such efforts beans and pulses such as pedisein,
matpe and pesinngon are fetching better prices in
the international market.

Duties have been assigned to beans and pulses
growing areas including Sagaing Division to extend
cultivation of the three beans and pulses crops.
Arrangements are being made to extend cultivation
of the three kinds of beans and pulses at the
suitable areas without affecting the cultivation
of other main crops.

In encouraging the beans and pulses farmers, the
nation is buying the crops on advanced payments.
Permission will be granted to entrepreneurs to
freely buy and export beans and pulses. The
nation will be developed only when there is
progress in the private sector. National
entrepreneurs should strive for development of
their business as well as the national economy.

The government is endeavouring for progress of the
agricultural and industrial sectors.
Encouragement is being given to national
entrepreneurs who have capital and expertise to
take part more in the two sectors. All should
strive for the advancement of the industrial
sector for national development. Way is being
paved to extend land border trade in addition to
the international maritime trade. Efforts should
be made for the nation's exports to gain deserving
prices in border trade.

In conclusion, the General stressed the need to
actively strive together with the government for
national progress with added momentum. He then
cordially greeted them.

Secretary-3 of the State Peace and Development
Council Lt-Gen Win Myint said the nation had had
to live under subjugation for over 100 years: and
the nation could not reach normal situation for
nearly 50 years after regaining independence due
to evil legacy of colonialists.

After the nation had passed these years, the
present government is able to make efforts for the
nation to gain development and to reach the normal
route. In so doing, the government laid down Our
Three Main National Causes in warding off attempts
of neo-colonialists to dominate and enslave the
nation. The nation is enjoying favourable
conditions and is on the right track due to
step-by-step implementation of the 12 objectives,

Efforts should be made with the aim of becoming a
forefront country in South-East Asia within a
decade by the year 2010. Only then can the
objective emergence of a peaceful, pleasant,
developed and modern nation be realized
practically.

After explaining the nation's situation, he
stressed the need to strive for progress of
agriculture based on rich soil and water
resources, for the nation to become the main beans
and pulses exporter to earn more foreign exchange,
elaborating on the implementation of the State's
objectives for advancement of industries,
stability of consumer prices and reducing
transport charges. A representative of beans and
pulses merchants, beans and pulses farmers, paddy
farmers and industrialists of Monywa District
reported on beans and pulses trade and
cultivation, paddy cultivation and industries and
local authorities of Sagaing, Shwebo, Monywa,
