If the new airport was opened six months, then they kept it a deep dark
secret. There was nothing in the official media about it.
A couple of weeks ago Khin Nyunt was snooping around (as spy bosses are
supposed to do!) and got an update on the building of approach roads (NLD
said they were partially constructed with forced labour) and New Light of
Myanmar said he gave suggestions on offering systematic airport handling
and services. Wonder if he told them about TAGS? Oh well, China Air
should keep them busy with new arrivals to populate Mandalay.

Tourism plans may yet take off

By Bruce Cheesman, Bangkok

Six months after the opening of Mandalay's multimillion-dollar airport,
the pride of the Burmese junta, a plane has yet to touch down on a
runway capable of handling Boeing 747s.

But help is at hand from Thai Airports Ground Services (TAGS), a company
which is close to signing an agreement with the Government to run the
airport. The Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) is prepared to give TAGS
a 28-year concession to run the airport, and a share of profits.
