World Conference against Racism

The World Conference against Racism will take place in South Africa,
probably from 31 August to 7 September 2001. There will be two Preparatory
Committee meetings in Geneva (PrepComs), the first from 1-5 May 2000 (i.e.
next week) and another in May 2001. There will also be a number of regional
and national "Satellite" meetings whose documents will be considered
official documents for the World Conference. If no such meeting is planned
for your area, organise a meeting yourselves, and ask the Office of the
High Commissioner for Human Rights to designate it as an official Satellite
meeting.

Racial discrimination as defined in Article 1 (1) of the International
Convention on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination is: "any
distinction, exclusion, restriction or preference based on race, colour,
descent or national or ethnic origin which has the purpose or effect of
nullifying or impairing the recognition, enjoyment or exercise, on an equal
footing, of human rights and fundamental freedoms; in the political,
economic, social, cultural or any other field of public life".

Since no such discrimination can take place in Burma, which is a
shining example to the world of racial harmony, this information will be
of no interest to any but the most extreme axe-handles and destructive
elements, who are probably already writing their fictitious reports on
racism in Burma to feed into the Conference process.

More information on this process, and how people can participate by way of
documents, or attending meetings, will be posted on the website of the UN
High Commissioner for Human Rights, www.unhchr.ch Click on World
Conference against Racism. There is already lots of background info on the
website, and after this forthcoming PrepCom, there will no doubt be more
details of forthcoming meetings.
