Increased seizure of heroin in Mizoram State of India

According to a release from the Excise Department in Mizoram State,
total 1.579 Kgs of Heroin was seized in Mizoram during the period of
January to April this year. This is a huge amount of seizure in four
months as it compares to 1999 in which total 1.375 Kgs of heroin was
seized. 44 persons were arrested in the past four months by the security
forces in connection with drugs.

The release further mentioned that drug-related death in Mizoram has
increased over the last three years. While 57 people died of drugs in
1997, the number increased to 89 in 1999. From January to April this
year, 51 people have died of drugs, out of which, 47 died of heroin/
proxivon capsule use.

Mizoram Excise Commissioner Mr. L. Lalzauva said that the entire heroin
seized in Mizoram came from Burma.
