Dissidents protest over Aung San Suu Kyi stand-off

Burmese pro-democracy activists in India today condemned the military
junta in their homeland and demanded to immediately allow their leader
Aung San Suu Kyi and her entourage travel freely and organize the
political activities. Shouting anti-junta slogans, about a hundred and
fifty activists under the banner of All Burma Students League held the
demonstration at Janta Mantar in New Delhi this morning.

The 1991 Nobel Peace Laureate Aung San Suu Kyi, two other leaders and a
dozen supporters have been stranded at a roadside in Dallah town since
Thursday as they attempted to travel to Kungyangon town, 30 miles south
of capital Rangoon, for party organization work. Burmese government said
that it has blocked Aung San Suu Kyi to protect her from unrest and
separatist forces. 

"This incident clearly shows that the military regime does not allow her
and other members of the NLD party to move freely and organize even
party organizational work", said the statement of All Burma Students
League. "We condemn the junta and demand it to immediately remove the
blockade", the statement continues. 

The National League for Democracy (NLD) led by Aung San Suu Kyi got a
landslide victory in the 1990 general elections but the military
government refused to hand over power to the NLD.
