Senior members of Myanmar oppositio

Senior members of Myanmar opposition under house arrest

AFP, Rangoon, 2 September 2000. At least three senior members
of Myanmar's opposition party have been placed under "house arrest"
Saturday, diplomats in Yangon said.

The houses of the three members of the opposition National League for
Democracy (NLD) central executive committee were surrounded by
security forces and their telephone lines cut, said a western diplomat
who asked not to be named.

All access to the three members has been denied to foreigners, the
diplomat said without revealing their names for fear of endangering them.

Other reports from Yangon indicate that all 10 members of the committee
[presumably, the 10-member Committee Representing the People's
Parliament, mandated to represent the parliament elected in Burma in 1990
-- DA] and others have been confined to their homes, including the party's
leader, Aung San Suu Kyi.

Myanmar's military authorities earlier Saturday raided the headquarters
of Aung San Suu Kyi's NLD party, while simultaneously announcing the
opposition leader had been "escorted" home following a lengthy roadside
stand-off with the junta.

The NLD won a huge general election victory in 1990, but the junta has
never recognised the result and is accused by foreign critics and human
rights groups of severe repression of opponents.
