Excerpts from report by Burmese radio on 4th September

A work coordination meeting on the hosting of the third ASEAN
Youth Affairs Ministers Meeting washeld at 1430 [local time]
today in the conference room of the Ministry of Social Welfare,
Relief and Resettlement.

Addressing the meeting, Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, secretary-1 of the
State Peace and Development Council [SPDC], explained that
the purpose of the meeting is to prepare for the third ASEAN
Youth Affairs Ministers Meeting to be held in Yangon [Rangoon]
from 30th October to 3rd November...

He said the government of the Union of Myanmar [Burma],
which has faith in the potential of youth, is endeavouring to
build a new nation which is peaceful, modern and developed.
He said youth are being trained in science and technology,
reservation of national heritage and culture, national unity and
union spirit... He said volunteer social organizations such as
the Union Solidarity and Development Association, the Red
Cross and the Auxiliary Fire Brigade are being systematically
organized with youth in order for them to contribute unitedly
to national construction. He said youths are being nurtured on
the correct national path so that they can stand tall internationally,
cherish and preserve traditional culture, safeguard and perpetuate
the union, and serve the nation.

He said, however, that two Western major nations are interfering
and dictating in the internal affairs of Myanmar and are operating
through various means to undermine the country's international
relations. They are creating all sorts of problems by abetting a
handful of instigators of unrest - a destructive group - which would
dance to their tune. They are siding with a handful of their followers,
while undermining the interests of the Myanmar people. They are
devoid of humanitarian consideration and are causing hardship to
the general pubic and destabilizing the country by causing all sorts
of problems.

They have consistently engaged in negative activities and interfered
in the internal affairs of another country instead of working towards
constructive bilateral relations. He said, therefore, it is necessary to
strive to establish friendly relations with the countries in the region
and participate actively in the regional forums of various sectors,
based on the correct stand...

He called on the meeting to counter the unfounded allegations made
by the two Western countries with a pessimistic outlook towards
Myanmar in order to ruin the country. He called on the meeting to project
truth and to portray the efforts for systematic development of the youth
sector and special opportunities provided to them...
