China [and Burma] signs Mekong navigation treaty

Representatives of China, Thailand, Burma and Laos signed a
treaty opening navigation along the Mekong River through their
territories, China Daily said. Under the treaty, 12 ports along
the river will be open to ships from all four countries, favourable
duties and tax rates will be introduced, and customs and inspection
procedures simplified.

China, Thailand and Laos also agreed that highways under
construction linking Kunming, Yunnan province, with Bangkok
would be open to motorists by 2004.
