Five Indian paramilitary troops were killed and six others were injured
in an attack by Burmese forces in North-East India border, a local
television news reported today.

The Star News Channel, monitored in New Delhi this afternoon, reported
that Burmese troops opened fire on Indian security forces in a border
area near Mon District of Nagaland State in India. Indian troops from
Assam Rifles Regiment retaliated the Burmese attack yesterday night.
However, the causalities of Burmese side are not known yet.

The Indian officials have so far played down the incident saying that it
could be a case of mistaken identity where Burmese army mistook the
soldiers to be Naga militants who killed 30 Burmese soldiers earlier
this year. The National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN) insurgents
are active in the area.

The External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Mr. Raminder Singh Jassal
said in New Delhi that it was a case of mistaken identity and the Indian
and Burmese government are in touch each other at the field both in army
level and diplomatic level.
