New Delhi, Nov. 10: India will play host to a prominent member of
Burma?s military junta who is arriving in New Delhi next week along with
a 16-member high level delegation. Burma?s chief of armed forces and
vice-chairman of the ruling state peace and development council Gen.
Maung Aye will be in India from November 14 to 21.

A senior official of the foreign ministry said that the visit should not
be seen as New Delhi?s stand on the democratically elected government.
The official said that Burma is a ?different? case as India has
historical and cultural ties with the south-east Asian nation.

Gen. Maung Aye?s visit is the first high-level contact between the
countries in the last ten years. Besides having discussions on enhancing
border trade and cooperation for curbing illegal border activities
including drug trafficking and insurgency, the two countries will sign a
credit line of $15 million for purchase of Indian goods.
