The Second Assembly of the World Movement for Democracy held at Sao
Paulo in Brazil concluded yesterday after four days of intensive
discussions on how to advance freedom and democracy around the world.

During the four-day assembly of ?Confronting the Challenges to Democracy
in the 21st Century?, the participants had discussed a wide range of
topics in more than 20 practical workshops such as how to help democrats
in closed societies, how to further cross-border and cross-regional
cooperation, creating a global network of young democracy activists and
using the Internet and other technologies to advance democracy around
the world.

Besides having topical workshops, regional workshops on Asia, Latin
America, Africa, Central and Eastern Europe were also organized during
the assembly. Political and economic situation of China, Malaysia and
the military-ruled Burma were highlighted in the Asian regional
workshops.

The participants had agreed on the need for prioritizing the movements
of democratization in the most closed countries where there are
authoritarian regimes like Burmese military junta.

Ms. Ayo Obe, member of World Movement for Democracy Steering Committee
from Nigeria told Mizzima that ?the whole purpose of the World Movement
for Democracy is to form the kind of network which will support
democrats everywhere whether there is established democracy, emerging
one or non-existence one, because there are democrats all over the world
even in very dictatorial and very repressive regimes?.

Nearly 500 democracy advocates and activists from more than 80
countries, including exiled democracy activists from Burma, participated
in the assembly. The next assembly of the world democrats will be in two
years time. The Steering Committee of the World Movement for Democracy
is considering several possible locations including venues in Africa,
the Far East and Eastern Europe.

In his video message to the assembly, the President of the United States
Mr. Bill Clinton said ?those of us who love democracy don?t think that
there is one answer to all the world?s problems but that does not mean
that democrats in the world can?t or should not unite. We can and we
should. That is why this work of world movement for Democracy is so
important?.

Washington-based National Endowment for Democracy (NED) is the main
organizer of the assembly.
