Advani hints at President's rule in Manipur

The Hindustan Times (New Delhi)
December 18, 2000

MANIPUR MAY come under President's rule in the wake of raging political
crisis in the State. Indications to this effect were given by Home
Minister L K Advani while talking to newsmen here.

The Home Minister said he had already talked to Congress president Sonia
Gandhi seeking her party's co-operation in this regard.

Advani said he would discuss the matter with Prime Minister Vajpayee
before the Government takes a decision.

The Government needs Congress support in Parliament, especially in the
Rajya Sabha where it does not have a majority, to get the approval for
any Presidential proclamation to bring the State under Central rule.
Manipur had been rocked by a political crisi after divisions within the
United Legislature Front coalition, headed by Chief Minister W Nipamacha
Singh, which is seeking to unseat Speaker Dhananjay Singh, who is
supported by the Opposition. UP Elections: Home Minister L K Advani
today ruled out the possibility of early assembly elections in Uttar
Pradesh. He said the Prime Minister's recent statements on Ayodhya did
not harm the BJP. "We did not raise it (Ayodhya issue). Congress raised
it and now the issue has boomeranged on them."
